High School
In high school boys basketball last night…
- Chassell shaded Lake Linden-Hubbell 60-59 in overtime.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Jeffers 55-37.
In high school hockey last evening…
- Jeffers defeated Escanaba 4-2. Brit Heinonen had a hat trick, as the Jets improve to 4-0.
Honors continue to come in for local high school volleyball players. The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters have released their All U-P teams. Calumet’s Allie Bjorn claimed the overall Miss Volleyball honor. Local players placed on the Dream Team included Bjorn, Maddie Torola and Jess Anderson from Calumet, Brooke Koskela and Emily L’Esperance from Hancock, and Mia Nordstrom from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
In Divisions One through Three, Calumet was honored as Team of the Year. Kingsford’s Maddy Kreider was selected as Defensive Player of the Year, and Flivvers coach Jaclynn Kreider was named Coach of the Year. Additional local players named to the first team included Jackie Kiilunen and Bella Coppo from Calumet, Emily Pietila from Houghton, and Bristol Shamion from West Iron County.
Special Mention honorees included Taylor Heinonen from Jeffers, and Laney Johnson, Chloe Serafin, and Jacey Sleeman from Houghton.
In Division Four, Hancock claimed Team of the Year honors, and Koskela was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Ava Fischer from Forest Park was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year honors went to Rudyard’s Laurie Morley. Additional local players named to the first team include Kiera Isaacson from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Cleo Milkey from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Reese Driscoll from Hancock, Bree Besonen, Emma Besonen and Irelynd McGeshick from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Ellie Ayers from Forest Park. Evie Anderson from Forest Park earned Honorable mention votes.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team grabbed an early lead, and cruised past St. Cloud State 88-70 in their home opener last night. Marcus Tomashek led the Huskies with 20 points, and Matt Schmainda added a career-best 15.
NHL
Lucas Raymond’s overtime goal closed out a 2-1 victory for the Red Wings over the Flames last night. Alex DeBrincat scored early for Detroit. Calgary’s Connor Zary found the net with three minutes remaining in regulation to force extra time. Cam Talbot made 24 saves.
The Wings host the Devils Friday afternoon, with coverage beginning at 2:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons suffered an ugly 131-111 loss to the Grizzlies last evening. With Cade Cunningham and Tobias Harris both sidelined by hip injuries, Marcus Sasser came off the bench to score 22 points for Detroit.
The Pistons visit the Pacers tomorrow night, with coverage beginning at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL
In today’s NFL games…
- The Lions host the Bears in a 12:30 contest on 99.3 The Lift. Detroit will be without cornerback Carlton Davis and tackle Taylor Decker. Running back David Montgomery and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown are questionable.
- The Cowboys welcome the Giants for a 4:30 tilt.
- The Packers entertain the Dolphins in an 8:20 game. Receiver Romeo Doubs, cornerback Jaire Alexander and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper will miss the game. Linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, center Josh Myers and tight end John FitzPatrick are listed as questionable.
