In high school boys basketball last night…
- Houghton smothered West Iron County 80-41. Luke Hill led all scorers with 35 points, and Lane Laux added 14. Elijah Oberlon led the Wykons with 16 points.
- Baraga shaded Ewen-Trout Creek 56-53.
- Forest Park got past Norway 65-54.
On the boys schedule tonight…
- Hancock travels to Ontonagon.
- Jeffers plays at Calumet to make up for a snowout on December 5th.

- Houghton entertains Baraga.
- Calumet hosts Westwood, with the varsity game beginning at 6:00.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Hancock. There will be no jv game, and the varsity contest will tip off at 6.

In a girls-boys doubleheader…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco.
Marquette swept the Houghton Invitational ski meet at Mont Ripley yesterday, taking the team titles in both the boys and girls slalom and giant slalom competitions. The Houghton boys finished second in the giant slalom, with Eli Heathman of the Gremlins nosing out Marquette’s Sam Dehlin to win the individual title. The Gremlins also placed second in the boys slalom, with Jack Haeussler placing fifth individually. The Gremlin girls finished third in giant slalom competition, with Rachel Sun placing fourth individually. The Houghton girls wound up fourth in the slalom, with Sun finishing 11th. College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 93-52 decision at Grand Valley State last night. Isabella Lenz scored 14 for the Huskies.
The men’s team pulled out a 59-58 win over the Lakers. Freshman Ty Fernholz’s three-pointer with 83 seconds remaining gave the Huskies the lead, and the Tech defense shut down Grand Valley from there on out. Dawson Nordgard’s block with two seconds remaining sealed the win. Fernholz led MTU with 18 points.
Both Huskies teams play at Davenport University tomorrow.
The Northern Michigan University women’s team got past Davenport 47-40 last night. The Wildcats scored just four points in the first quarter, but took control with 22 in the second. MacKenzie Holzwart and Sarah Newcomer each scored 12.
The NMU men’s team overcame a six-point halftime deficit, and dispatched the Panthers 60-52. Dylan Keuhl scored 19.
Both Wildcats teams play at Grand Valley tomorrow.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens play at the inaugural Coachella Valley Cactus Cup tournament tonight against Massachusetts-Lowell. Holy Cross faces Nebraska-Omaha in the other semifinal this afternoon.
The tourney wraps up tomorrow.
Two Huskies have been honored by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Stiven Sardarian was named Forward of the Week. He collected three assists in Tech’s two games at the Great Lakes Invitational, including on the game-winner against Northern in overtime in the consolation game. Logan Morrell was named Rookie of the Week, for scoring that overtime goal. Both have also been selected as CCHA Players of the Month for December.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the M and M Shamrocks tonight.
The Calumet Wolverines visit the De Pere Deacons tonight, and the M and M Shamrocks tomorrow.
NHL
Jonatan Berggren’s goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jackets last night. First period tallies by Patrick Kane, Erik Gustafsson and Alex DeBreincat gave Detroit an early lead. Dylan Larkin reestablished a one-goal advantage early in the third period, until James van Riemsdyk’s goal with less than three minutes remaining re-tied the contest. Cam Talbot made 21 saves.
The Wings have won three in a row, and welcome the Jets tomorrow. Because of programming conflicts, there will be no radio broadcast.
NBA
The Pistons entertain the Hornets tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit will play without Jaden Ivey for quite some time. Ivey underwent surgery to repair a broken leg yesterday. He was taken off the court on a stretcher after a collision with Cole Anthony during Wednesday’s game against the Magic.
MLB
The Brewers have picked up right-handed pitcher Grant Anderson from the Rangers. Anderson was recently designated for assignment by Texas. In exchange, Milwaukee gives up minor league left-hander Mason Molina. Anderson went 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA and one save in 23 relief appearances for Texas last season. He fared better at Triple-A Round Rock last season, where he was 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA and one save in 26 appearances.
