Tech Hockey Wins WCHA Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In the district finals of the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– Division Two District 33, Houghton lost to Kingsford 3-0.

The Calumet Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis today at 1:00 in the Division Six district football final. The game will be played at Thirlby Field in Traverse City. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The winner of today’s game will host Kingsley in the regional final next week. The Stags defeated Beaverton 44-14 to win their district title last night.

In other action involving Upper Peninsula teams…
– Ishpeming won its Division Eight district title by defeating West Iron County 38-0. The Hematites will face Breckenridge next weekend.
– Iron Mountain lost to Roscommon 22-7 in their Division Seven district final.
– Escanaba plays its Division Four district final at Alma today.
– In eight-player Division Two, Rapid River eliminated Forest Park 40-34. Cedarville blanked Posen 44-0. Rapid River and Cedarville will meet in the state semifinals next weekend.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University soccer teams will host the American Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs this weekend…
– In the women’s semifinals, Finlandia will face Thomas More today at 10:00, and SUNY Delhi will play Alfred State at 1:00.
– In the men’s semifinals, Finlandia will take on Thomas More today at 4:00, and SUNY Delhi will play Pine Manor at 7:00.
The finals will be played tomorrow. We’ll broadcast all of the Lions’ games on 99.3 the Lift and TheLift.com.

The Finlandia volleyball team will compete at the ACAA tournament at SUNY-Delhi this weekend. The Lions will face Alfred State in the semifinals today.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 1-0 to Trine University last night. Annah Smiddy made 27 saves for the Lions. Those teams play again this afternoon at 4:15 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Lions men’s hockey team defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 4-3 last night. Kendall Bolen-Porter scored the game-winner midway through the third period. Vinny Mastrandrea, Alex Rezansoff  and Andrew Froese also scored. Marcus Gloss made 35 saves. It’s the first time in a decade that the Lions have won their conference opener. Finlandia will play at Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon.

The Finlandia football team plays at Albion College today.

The Lions women’s basketball team plays an exhibition at Northern Michigan University today.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team edged Alabama-Huntsville 2-1 last night to win its Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener. Both Huskies goals came in the second period, off the sticks of Justin Misiak and Colin Swoyer. Matt Jurusik made 16 saves. The Huskies play in Huntsville again tonight.

The Tech volleyball team lost 3-0 (21-25, 12-25, 17-25) at eighth-ranked Ferris State last night. The Huskies close their regular season at Northwood University today.

The MTU football team is off this weekend.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 3-1 at Bowling Green last night. The Wildcats face the Falcons again this evening.

The NMU football team plays at Wayne State this afternoon.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers will open their season in Marquette against the Mutineers tonight at 7:00.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will visit the Philadelphia 76ers this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Edmonton Oilers tonight. Pregame coverage will start at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the Minnesota Vikings for a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Green Bay Packers visit the New England Patriots in the Sunday night contest. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
