High School

In high school football Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell opened an early lead, and cruised past Ironwood 48-12. The Lakes led 40-0 at the end of the first quarter, and played reserves much of the rest of the game. Danny Marcotte rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on just four attempts, and also threw a short touchdown pass. Sam Roberts ran for 91 yards on eight attempts, and scored three times.

In volleyball Saturday…
• Houghton won the Escanaba Invitational, going 5-1 in pool play, and defeating Manistique in the title game 2-1 (25-22, 25-27, 15-11).

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team fell 23-21 at Wayne State Saturday. On a windy day in Detroit, the Huskies racked up 10 penalties, and missed three field goals. Alex Fries threw two touchdown passes, and William Marano ran for 115 yards and one score.

The Northern Michigan football team lost 28-12 at 16th-ranked Davenport University.

College Hockey

The 10th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team opened its season with a 2-2 draw against 17th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game Saturday. The Bulldogs won the post-game shootout. Ryland Mosley and Patriks Marcinkevics scored for the Huskies. Blake Pietila made 48 saves, as the Huskies were outshot 50-34.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team dropped a close first set to Parkside, then came back to earn a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20) Saturday. Lindy Oujiri led the Huskies with 17 kills. Tess Hayes recorded a season-best 54 assists.

The NMU volleyball squad earned a 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21) victory over Purdue Northwest Saturday.

College Soccer

The NMU men’s soccer team entertains Purdue Northwest today.

NHL

The Red Wings came from behind to edge the Maple Leafs 4-3 in their final preseason contest Saturday evening. Trailing 2-0, Detroit got consecutive goals from Dylan Larkin, Ben Chiarot, Joe Veleno and Daniel Sprong to take control. Ville Husso made 21 saves. The Wings open their regular season Thursday at new Jersey. Because of NFL Football on 99.3 The Lift, the game will be broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons open their NBA preseason campaign this afternoon when the host the Suns. Listen for select Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

On the opening day of the divisional round of the baseball playoffs.

In the American League…
• The Rangers edged the Orioles 3-2.
• The Twins fell to the Astros 6-4.

Both of those series continue today.

In the National League…
• The Phillies blanked the Braves 3-0.
• The Diamondbacks routed the Dodgers 11-2.

Both of those sets continue tomorrow.

NFL

The Lions host the Panthers in a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift. Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is listed as doubtful with an ab injury. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been downgraded to doubtful, and tight end James Mitchell is doubtful, as they nurse hamstring injuries. Receiver Jameson Williams is listed as questionable, following his return from suspension. Brian Branch will not play, because of an ankle injury.

The Packers visit the Raiders in Monday night’s contest on 99.3 The Lift. Running back Aaron Jones is among those listed as doubtful for the game.

Running

At the Jeff4ers Jets Run/walk Saturday…
• Evan Pietila took the title in the 10k, finishing more than six minutes ahead of Bridget Kinnunen.
• Cameron Anderson won the 5k run, 85 seconds better than Trayton Helminen.
