Tech Hockey Thumps NMU – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…
• Calumet blanked Hancock 3-0. Jackson Rilei, Cliff Jurmu and Paul Sturos scored for the Copper Kings. Aksel Loukus made 33 saves, as the Bulldogs outshot the Copper Kings 33-13.

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton came back from an early deficit, before dropping a 57-56 heartbreaker to Ishpeming in overtime. Mikko Salmi led the Huskies with 28 points, including seven three-pointers. Dylan Primeau added 13 points.
• L’Anse outscored Bessemer 46-37.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Ontonagon 68-44. Danny Marcotte scored 25 for the Lakes.

In girls play last evening…
• Ontonagon defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 59-32. Makennah Uotila scored 13 for the Gladiators. Emily Jokela led the Lakes with 14.
• Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Hurley 49-31.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton welcomes West Iron County.
• Jeffers hosts Ewen-Trout Creek in a non-conference match.

In boys-girls doubleheaders this evening…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City entertains Watersmeet – the girls at 5:45, and the boys at 7:15.

In Alpine skiing yesterday…
• At the Ironwood Invitational, both Houghton teams finished second to Marquette – the girls by a scant 1.5 points. The teams skied two giant slalom races. On the girls side, Blanca Borrell Pages earned a second and a fourth place finish. Ashley Lehmann finished with a third and a second. On the boys side, Reed Heathman won both events, and Eli Heathman took a second and a third.

College Hockey

The 15th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team won its fifth straight match, routing Northern Michigan 5-1 last night. Tommy Parrottino led the Huskies with two goals and two assists. Trenton Bliss had a goal and three assists, and Logan Pietila and Brian Halonen each scored once. Blake Pietila made 22 saves.

Finlandia University women’s hockey goaltender Kayla Savoie-Penton has been named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. Savoie-Penton gave up just two goals as the Lions swept Lawrence University last weekend – the first win for the Lions in two years, and the first weekend sweep in nearly four years.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Los Angeles Kings this evening. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons faded down the stretch, and lost 111-101 to the New Orleans Pelicans last night. Detroit was held to just 14 points in the final quarter. Cory Joseph led the Pistons with 18 points. Jerami Grant returned to the lineup with with 17, after missing two dozen games with a thumb injury. Cade Cunningham scored just six before leaving with a hip pointer.

The Pistons entertain the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have promoted Jason Vrable to wide receivers and passing game coordinator. He’s been the wide receivers coach for the past two seasons. Luke Butkus has been named offensive line coach. He’s been the assistant for the past several seasons, and is the nephew of NFL legend Dick Butkus.

MLB

Negotiators for Major League Baseball team owners and players met in a video conference yesterday, but little progress was reported. Spring training is scheduled to begin two weeks from today, but observers following the talks say there appears to be little chance that will happen.

Snowmobiling

The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club poker run to benefit the new groomer barn will take place Saturday. The run will begin at the location of the new barn, at the corner of Osceola and Spruce Streets in Calumet. After some stops, it will end at Fletchys Otter Belly Lodge, where participants can see the new groomers, and enjoy some great food and company. There will be prizes for the best hand, and additional prizes for best sleds. For more information, click here.
