Tigers’ Season Ends with Sweep
The Detroit Tigers’ 2014 playoff run ended yesterday with a 2-1 loss to the Orioles. David Price pitched eight strong innings. His only mistake was a sixth-inning pitch that Nelson Cruz lofted into the right field seats just inside the foul pole for a two-run homer. Cruz has now hit eight post-season home runs against the Tigers. Detroit couldn’t score until J.D. Martinez doubled in Victor Martinez in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Hernan Perez ended the threat… and the series… when he grounded into a double play.
Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila left yesterday’s game with more concussion-like symptoms, after having been struck in the face mask by a foul tip. It’s the fourth time this season Avila had to leave a game after being hit in the head. He’ll consult a neurologist and other experts during the off-season.
Lions Booted by Bills
In NFL action, Alex Henery missed three field goals, as the Lions lost to the Bills 17-14 yesterday. Henery’s final misfire came from 50 yards out with 21 seconds remaining and the game tied. Buffalo turned around and kicked a 58-yarder to win it a few seconds later. After the game, Lions’ coach Jim Caldwell hinted that another kicking change might be in the wind… CALDWELL. The Detroit offense could get nothing going against the Bills’ defense… especially after receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Reggie Bush were forced from the game with ankle injuries. Matthew Stafford hit Golden Tate with a nine-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Detroit’s other score came when Rashean Mathis returned an interception 41-yards for a touchdown. The Lions will play at Minnesota on Sunday.
Seattle and Washington will play in tonight’s NFL game.
After yesterday’s game, the Bills filed a protest, alleging that someone in the stands was using a laser pointer to distract their players. The Lions’ security team could not find anyone in the stands with a pointer, and the team reminded fans that such devices are prohibited.
