In high school hockey, Jeffers lost to Sault Ste. Marie 6-1 in the opening game of the Soo Elks Tournament Friday night. The Jets will face Big Rapids this afternoon at 3:00.

In high school football tournament action for Upper Peninsula teams this weekend…
– In eight-man play, Cedarville lost to Lawrence 56-12 in the state title game.
– In the Division Eight semifinals, Munising edged perennial contender Beal City 10-7 Friday night at the Superior Dome. The Mustangs will play for the state title Friday in Detroit, against the winner of today’s game between Harbor Beach and Muskegon Catholic Central.
– In Division Seven, Ishpeming will face Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary this afternoon at 2:00 at the Dome.
– In Division Five, Menominee will take on defending champion Grand Rapids West Catholic this morning at 11:00 at the Dome.

MTU Hockey Streak Over
Michigan Tech’s 10-game winning streak ended Friday night with a 2-1 loss to ninth-ranked Minnesota State. The Huskies took the lead on an Alex Petan goal early in the second period, and held on until the Mavericks scored twice in 24 seconds midway through the third period. Jamie Phillips made 32 saves in his first loss of the season. The top-ranked Huskies host MSU again tonight at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena. See video highlights of the game here.

The Michigan Tech football team will host it first-ever NCAA tournament game this afternoon. Kickoff is at noon against Angelo State. The temperature is expected to be 36 degrees, and we might see a little sun during the game.

The Tech women’s basketball team got off to an early lead, and was never headed, on the way to a 65-54 victory over 10th-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening. The Huskies’ defense held the Golden Bears to just 21 points in the second half. Danielle Blake led Tech with 23 points and nine rebounds. Jillian Ritchie added 11 points and 13 boards.

The Tech men’s hoops team opens its season at Minnesota-Duluth this afternoon. The Huskies bring back 13 of last year’s 16 letterwinners, including GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year Ben Stelzer.

NMU Hockey Wins at Alaska
The Northern Michigan University hockey team edged Alaska-Anchorage 1-0 Friday night. Freshman Robbie Payne scored the game’s only goal, and Mathias Dahlstrom stopped 13 shots to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Those teams play in Alaska again tonight.

The Wildcats women’s basketball team hosts Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.

Finlandia Hockey, Hoops Fall
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost at Wisconsin-Stout 4-1 Friday night. The Lions took an early lead on Tim Santopoalo’s unassisted goal late in the first period, but the Blue Devils tied it in the second period, and wrapped up their first victory of the season with three goals in the final stanza. Andrew Brownlee made 33 saves, as Finlandia was outshot 37-25. The Lions skate at Wisconsin-Superior tonight. The women’s hockey team plays at Concordia-Wisconsin tonight.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost to Luther College 84-73 in their opening game at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh tournament Friday night. The Lions led by two points at halftime, but scored just 21 in the second half. Eric Lori and Brandon Robinette led Finlandia with 18 points apiece. Robinette grabbed 10 rebounds. The Lions will face Blackburn College in the consolation game this evening.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team lost 70-58 to the University of Northwestern in the opening game of the Northwestern Tip-Off Friday night. The Lions got off to a cold start, scoring just 22 in the first half, and trailing by 19 at halftime.Marissa Burke paced Finlandia with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Brierra Ruska-Pasanen and Julia Daavitila each scored 10. The Lions play North Central today.

NHL – Red Wings at Toronto
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Toronto tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Hawks
The Detroit Pistons fell behind during a cold second period, and lost at Atlanta 99-89 Friday night. Detroit trailed by as many as 19 points. They rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Josh Smith scored 16 points and Andre Drummond added 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons. Detroit has lost four straight, and plays at Milwaukee Tuesday night. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL
In NFL action tomorrow, the Lions visit the Patriots. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers play at Minnesota – that’s also a 1:00 kickoff.

Because of the heavy snow in Buffalo, Monday night’s Bills game against the Jets has been moved to Ford Field in Detroit. Tickets for local fans will be free.

MLB – Counsell to Stay with Brewers
Former Brewers’ infielder Craig Counsell has withdrawn from consideration as the next manager of the Miami Marlins. Counsell is a special assistant to Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin.
