Tech Hockey Opens Season with OT Victory – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…

  • Houghton routed Gladstone 42-17. The Braves opened an early 14-7 lead, but the Gremlins tied the game on a 90-yard kickoff return by Brayden Goudge. He also scored on an 82-yard run from scrimmage, and caught a 27-yard touchdown pass.
  • Calumet rolled up a 34-0 halftime lead, and cruised to a 47-18 victory over Hancock. Ben Anderson scored on runs of two, 65, five and 50 yards. Peter Eskola returned an interception 34 yards for a score, and  the Kings closed the first half with a 42-yard touchdown on a hook and lateral play. Cody Turner scored all of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns, on runs of 89 and 12 yards, and a 78-yard pass play from Ben Keranen.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Gogebic 29-12. Brady Axford completed five of 13 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 54 yards. Nate St. Onge ran for the Lakes’ other score.
  • Ontonagon lost to North Central 78-43.

Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta has been named the Copper Mountain Conference boys cross country Runner of the Year. First Team runners include Landon Larson, Cameron Anderson and Branson Anderson from Jeffers, and Joshua Gaunt from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Zach Smith and Joey Lauzon from Ironwood round out the First Team. Second Team honors went to Blake Heltunen, Tage Rajala and Noah Randall of the Jets, Landon Halkela and Cleb Kentala of the Blue Bolts, Daniel Tobaldo from the Red Devils, and Gogebic’s Noah Verbos.

The top girls honor went to Ironwood runner Aubrey Smith. First Team honors were given to Sylvia Aho from Chassell, Sophie DesRochers from Baraga, Alyssa Shirkey from Gogebic, and Ewen-Trout Creek’s Bree Besonen, Emma Besonen and Leona Schutz. Members of the girls Second Team include Princess Pierre and Breyelle Bowers of the Vikings, Alyssa DeCremer and Enara Moreno from Ewen, Lily Etelamaki and Jordan Holombo from Chassell, and Madelyn Smith and Audrey Balduc from Ironwood.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its season with a tense 2-1 overtime victory over Alaska last night. Max Koskipiirti put the Huskies on the board 15 seconds into the game. Elias Jansson’s first collegiate goal was the game-winner. Max Vayrynen earned the win in net with 15 saves.

Those teams skate at the SDC again tonight, with faceoff at 6:07. 

Northern Michigan begins its hockey season with a 4-3 overtime loss at 12th-ranked Colorado College. Matthew Romer scored his first two collegiate goals. Those teams meet again this evening.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Northern Michigan yesterday. 

The NMU men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Davenport last evening. The Wildcats play at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

College Volleyball

The NMU volleyball squad battled past Roosevelt University 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-9, and 25-23) last evening. McKenzie Gruner had 15 kills for the Wildcats.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team will host Roosevelt today at 2:00. 

College Football

The MTU football team entertains Davenport University today at noon.

The NMU football squad plays at Grand Valley State tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Predators tonight. Because of college football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

Jeff Petry will miss tonight’s game because of an upper-body injury he sustained in Thursday’s season-opener. He’s considered day-to-day. Justin Holl has been called up from Grand Rapids to fill in.

NBA

Cade Cunningham scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, as the Pistons outscored the Suns 109-91 in a preseason game last evening. Tobias Harris added 22 points.

Detroit visits Golden State tomorrow night. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers and Guardians will decide their American League Divisional Series today in Cleveland. Tarik Skubal will start against Matthew Boyd. After a couple of changes – one caused by potential storms in Cleveland tonight – the game was finally scheduled for early this afternoon. Because of college football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 12:40 on KBear 102. The winner will face the Yankees for the American League pennant.

The Dodgers blanked the Padres 2-0 in their National League Divisional Series, and will face the Mets for the NL pennant beginning tomorrow night. 

NFL

The Lions play at Dallas in a 4:25 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers host the Cardinals in a 1:00 contest tomorrow.

In the Sunday night game, the Bengals visit the Giants, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
