Tech Hockey Opens NCAA Tourney Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Munising boys basketball team advanced to the Division Four state championship game with a 55-44 victory over Marine City Cardinal Mooney in the semifinals last night. The Mustangs will face defending champion Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian tomorrow morning at 10:00. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3. Tri-Unity defeated Frankfort 54-37 in yesterday’s other semifinal.

The annual Spring Swing Softball Invitational opens today at the Superior Dome. Games involving local teams include:
• L’Anse v Negaunee JV – 3:00 – Field One
• Niagara v Lake Linden-Hubbell – 4:30 – Field Two
• Calumet JV v Wittenberg-Birnamwood JV – 7:30 – Field One
• L’Anse v Florence – 9:00 – Field Two

College Basketball

Michigan State University exited the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament with a 98-93 overtime loss to Kansas State in the round of 16 last night.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech opens the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament tonight against Penn State in Allentown. Face-off is at 5:00. Doors to the watch party at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena will open at 4:30. The University of Michigan will play Colgate in the other regional semifinal at 8:30.

In opening-round games yesterday, CCHA champion Minnesota State was ousted by St. Cloud State 4-0. St. Cloud will face Minnesota for that regional title tomorrow. Western Michigan lost to Boston University 5-1. Boston will take on Cornell for that regional crown tomorrow.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Calumet Wolverines tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Wolverines host the Marquette Mutineers tomorrow at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings lost 4-3 to the Blues last night. Simon Edvinsson scored his first NHL goal for Detroit 38 seconds into the game, and Detroit led 2-1 at the end of the first period. The Blues took control with three goals in the second frame, chasing goaltender Magnus Hellberg from the game. Hellberg was replaced by Alex Nedeljkovic, who had been called up from Grand Rapids after Ville Husso suffered a lower body injury.

The Wings visit the Flyers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Raptors tonight. Coverage begins at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Half of the Tigers lost 4-1 to the Phillies yesterday. Joey Wentz pitched into the fifth, gave up three runs, and took the loss. The other half of the Tigers played to an 8-8 tie with the Orioles last night. Nick Maton and Akil Baddoo homered.

The Tigers play the Pirates this evening. Eduardo Rodriguez will start for Detroit.

The Brewers outscored a split Padres squad 4-2 yesterday. Victor Caratini homered.

The Brewers split their squad for games against the Rockies and the Dodgers today.
