High School

On the hockey schedule…

  • Third-ranked Houghton and second-ranked East Grand Rapids skated to a 1-1 tie at the West Michigan Hockey Showcase in Grand Rapids. Hudson Markham scored early for the Gremlins. Brady Ross tied it late in the second period. East Grand Rapids’ Trevor Bird found the net to end a seven-round post-game shootout. 
  • Calumet knocked off eighth-ranked Escanaba 5-4. Nathan Londo netted the game-winner off assists from Brendan Boberg and Ted Loukus. Erik Loukus, Ben Anderson Brady Boberg and Liam Pomroy also scored for the Copper Kings. Hear the game replay here.

  • Houghton faces Forest Hills Central at the West Michigan Hockey Showcase in Grand Rapids. Coverage will begin at 10:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

In boys basketball last evening…

  • Baraga stopped Lake Linden-Hubbell 65-37.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Ironwood 54-47.
  • West Iron County fell 72-22 to Iron Mountain.

On last night’s girls schedule…

  • Houghton lost to Negaunee 57-46. Eva Gerard led the Gremlins with 14 points. The Miners’ Aubrey Johnson scored 15.
  • Calumet outscored West Iron County 42-31. Jackie Kiilunen scored 17 for the Copper Kings.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Baraga 49-37.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shut down Chassell 47-27.
  • Ontonagon fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 61-53.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Ironwood 58-35.

College Hockey

The MTU hockey team shut down St. Thomas 2-1 last night. Owen Baker scored his first Huskies’ goal, and Rylan Brown’s third-period power play goal was the game-winner. Derek Mullahy made 25 saves to get the win in net.

Those teams skate again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC. It’s the annual Teddy Bear Toss game, and fans are encouraged to being new stuffed toys to throw onto the ice at the first intermission. Donations will be turned over to Toys for Tots.

The Northern hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Ferris State last night. Aidyn Hutchinson scored the Wildcats’ only goal. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Purdue Northwest this afternoon. The women’s tip-off is at noon, and the men’s at 2:00.

Both NMU squads host Parkside today.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell 7-6 in an overtime shootout at Mosinee last night. Former Copper Kings goalie Ian Carroll made 29 saves for the Papermakers.

The Pioneers skate at Fond du Lac tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Avalanche tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Knicks this evening.

Cross Country Skiing

The Swedetown Trails Club will host a season-opening self-supported freestyle ski race today. The course will be approximately 7.5km with an interval start beginning at 10:00. It is a free event with a suggested $20 donation to support early season grooming. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers. No advance registration is required.
