High School

The Houghton High School swim team meet at Sault Ste. Marie scheduled for today has been called off because of bad weather. No make-up date has been announced.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team spotted Alabama Huntsville an early goal, then came back to claim a 3-1 victory last night. Brian Halonen tied the game with a power play tally early in the second period. Arvid Caderoth scored the game-winner seconds into the third frame, and Tristan Ashbrook added a late insurance score. Mark Sinclair earned an easy win in net against his former team, as the Huskies outshot the Chargers 39-9.

Those teams skate again this evening in Huntsville.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad plays at Lake Superior State University today and tomorrow.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team opened its season with a 6-1 loss to Marian University at the Houghton County Arena. The Sabres opened quickly, and led 4-0 before Tyler Vanuden scored the Lions’ only goal midway through the second period. Marcus Gloss took the loss in net.

Those teams play again tonight in Fond du Lac.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams defeated Saginaw Valley State University yesterday.

The men’s squad dominated the second half, on the way to a 76-57 triumph. Eric Carl led the Huskies with a career-best 24 points. Dawson Bilski added 21, and Trent Bell snared 11 rebounds.

The women’s team dominated the middle part of the game, and dispatched SVSU 63-52. The Huskies rolled up a 37-20 advantage in the second and third quarters. Sara Dax led a balanced Tech attack with 14 points. Ellie Mackay collected eight rebounds.

Both MTU teams face SVSU again today – the men in Houghton, and the women at University Center.

The Northern women’s basketball team lost 69-60 at Northwood University last night. The women play in Midland again today. The men’s team faces the Timberwolves today and tomorrow in Marquette.

Both Finlandia basketball teams will start their seasons today at Martin Luther College in Minnesota.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost their eighth straight game last night, 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Vladislav Namestnikov’s goal midway through the first period gave Detroit an early advantage, but Tampa Bay scored two off Thomas Griess to take the lead, and added a late empty-netter.

The Detroit Pistons fell 109-92 to the Suns in Phoenix last night. Jerami Grant scored 21 for Detroit, and Isaiah Stewart hauled in 10 rebounds.

Jonathan Schoop will be back at second base for the Detroit Tigers this summer. Schoop agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract. To make room for Schoop on the roster, the Tigers designated outfielder Travis Demeritte for assignment.

Sergio Alcántara is no longer a Detroit Tiger. The versatile infielder was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.
