High School

In high school boys basketball last night…
• Calumet outscored West Iron County 49-32. Gavin Sturos led the Copper Kings with 17 points. Elijah Oberlin scored 15 for the Wykons. Hear the game replay here.
• Hancock got past L’Anse 59-51.
• Chassell downed Ontonagon 60-44. Eli Danison led the Panthers with 20 points and Oliver Campbell added 18.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell cruised past Ewen-Trout Creek 62-50.
• Jeffers dumped Ironwood 72-39.
• Baraga fell to Watersmeet 67-42.

In girls play last evening…
• Houghton defeated Westwood 62-45. Danica Ryynanen scored 16 for the Gremlins, and Clea Ollanketo netted 14. Megan Marta led the Patriots with 17, and Lexi Olson scored 15.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Bessemer 58-44.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 59-55 overtime win over Ewen-Trout Creek.
• Jeffers lost to Ironwood 39-33.
• Baraga smothered Watersmeet 73-11.

In boys hoops play this evening…
• Houghton visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

On the girls schedule…
• Hancock welcomes Escanaba – postponed to January 20th, with the JV at 3:30, and the varsity to follow.

• The Jeffers trip to the Merrill Tournament has been canceled.

In hockey tomorrow…
• Houghton welcomes Detroit Jesuit. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
 • Calumet plays host to Brother Rice. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Jeffers will face either Merrill or Medford to wrap up the Merrill Tourney – canceled.

In a three-way meet that was postponed from Tuesday because of bad weather, both Houghton High School swim teams earned victories over Ishpeming and Manistique yesterday.
• The girls racked up 149 points, with Ishpeming at 125, and Manistique at 29. The Gremlins got wins from Willow Jenson in the 200 freestyle, Meg Ruohonen in diving, Alaina Eles in the 100 freestyle, Aya Keteri in the 500 freestyle, and Evelyn LaTendresse in the 100 breaststroke. The girls also won all three relays.
• The boys compiled 144 points. Ishpeming had 118, and Manistique 27. Collin Raasio took the 200 and 500 individual medleys, Beau Haataja won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Brett Gaff claimed the 200 freestyle. The boys also claimed wins in all three relays.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost to Ferris State last evening.
• The women fell 66-54 to the 11th-ranked Bulldogs. Katelyn Meister scored 16 for the Huskies.
• The men dropped a 69-68 heartbreaker to the 12-ranked Bulldogs. Ethan Erickson’s three-pointer with five seconds remaining won the game for Ferris. Marcus Tomashek scored 20 for the Huskies.

Both Northern teams pulled out wins over Lake Superior State.
• The women cruised to a 76-49 victory. Makaylee Kuhn scored 18 points, and became the Wildcats’ all-time scoring leader with 1,709 for her career.
• Max Weisbrod’s buzzer-beater from the top of the key gave the NMU men’s team a 72-71 victory over LSSU. He had 25 for the Wildcats, and Dylan Kuehl added 22.

Both Tech teams host LSSU tomorrow – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

Both NMU teams entertain Ferris State.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech fell behind early, and lost at Saint Thomas 4-3 last night. Former Hancock High School standout Alex Nordstrom scored his first two collegiate goals for the Huskies, and Isaac Gordon also found the net. Blake Pietila stopped 31 shots. That set concludes tomorrow night in Minnesota.

Northern Michigan visits Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Mosinee Papermakers tomorrow night.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Oilers 3-2 in overtime last night. Darnell Nurse scored the game-winner 80 seconds into the extra frame. Andrew Copp and Olli Määttä scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon made 44 saves, as the Wings were outshot 47-17.

The Wings entertain the Kings tomorrow night. 

NBA

The Pistons welcome the Rockets tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The NFL playoffs begin tomorrow…
• The Browns visit the Texans in a 4:30 contest.
• The Chiefs welcome the Dolphins for an 8:00 game.

On Sunday…
• The Bills host the Steelers in a 1:00 game.
• The Packers visit the Cowboys for a 4:30 contest.
• The Lions entertain Matthew Stafford and the Rams in an 8:00 game.

The Eagles wrap up Wild Card weekend at Tampa Bay Monday night.

MLB

The Tigers have signed one-year contracts with pitcher Tarik Skubal, catcher Jake Rogers and outfielder Akil Baddoo, avoiding arbitration with all three. They were not able to come to terms with pitcher Casey Mize, so his salary could be decided in an arbitration hearing later this month.

The Brewers agreed to deals with pitchers Corbin Burnes, Joel Payamps, Bryse Wilson and Devin Williams, shortstop Willy Adames, and first baseman Jake Bauers.

Former Brewers reliever Brent Suter has signed a one-year deal with the Reds.
