Tech Hockey Falls; Team CC Advances – Saturday Sports Update

MTU Athletics Logo 2016There’ll be no Broadmoor Trophy for the Michigan Tech hockey team his year. The Huskies were eliminated from the WCHA playoffs with a 1-0 loss to Ferris State University Friday night. The game was scoreless until midway through the third period, when the Bulldogs’ Kenny Babinski’s slapshot glanced off a Huskies defender, and slipped past goalie Jamie Phillips. Phillips stopped 32 shots in the loss. FSU goalie Darren Smith made 30 saves. Ferris will face Minnesota State in the championship game tonight in Grand Rapids.

The Team Copper Country hockey squad earned a spot in the semifinals of the Midget AA Tier Two Tournament in Howell with two victories on Friday. In the first game, Reid Pietila and Dawson McKay scored as Team CC edged the Lansing Spartans 2-1. In the nightcap, Lance Kangas, Reid Pietila, and Dawson McKay each scored twice, as Team CC routed Dearborn Belle Tire 8-2. Danny Hill and Rory Anderson each had one goal, and Rory Anderson collected three assists. Team CC will wrap up pool play against the Allen Park Huskies this afternoon. The Huskies also won both of their games yesterday. Our pregame coverage will begin around 1:45 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com. The semifinals and final will be played tomorrow. The winner will advance to the national tournament.

The Detroit Pistons exploded for 39 points in the first quarter, and held on to defeat the Sacramento Kings 115-108 Friday night. After bursting out to an 18-point lead, Detroit let Sacramento back into it, and the Kings tied the game early in the fourth quarter. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a couple of three-pointers to turn the tide. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 24 points. The Pistons host the Nets tonight.

15th-seeded Middle Tennessee State stunned second-seeded Michigan State 90-81 in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday. The Spartans never led in a game that coach Tom Izzo called “the hardest loss I’ve ever gone through.” It’s just the eighth time in tournament history that a number-two seed has been ousted in the first round. The University of Michigan also exited the field in the first round, falling to Notre Dame 70-63. Our tournament coverage continues today and tomorrow at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Friday. Matt Boyd gave up just two hits over five innings, and struck out seven. The Tigers face the Marlins this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Friday. Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson gave up three tuns in the first inning, and another in the third. Chris Carter homered. The Brewers will face the Angels today.

Running back James Starks has signed a two-year deal to remain with the Green Bay Packers. It’s worth six-million dollars.
