Tech Hockey Falls in NCAA Opener – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Ewen-Trout Creek will play for a state boys basketball title. The Panthers eliminated Lake Leelanau Saint Mary 62-56 in the semifinals last evening. E-TC took control early, and led by double digits much of the game before holding off a late comeback by the Eagles that tied the score with two minutes remaining. A basket by Jaden Borseth reestablished the Ewen lead, and he hit a couple of late free throws to seal the win. Kelsey Jilek led the Panthers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Borseth added 18, and Eric Abramson scored 15.

Ewen will play Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian in the championship game tomorrow morning at 10:00. The Defenders routed Genesee Christian 77-33 last night. Hear tomorrow’s game on KBear 102.3.

Menominee defeated Ecorse 74-56 in the Division Three semifinals yesterday afternoon. The Maroons will face Schoolcraft in the title game tomorrow at 4:30. The Eagles eliminated Flint Beecher 55-39 yesterday. Hear tomorrow’s game on KBear 102.3.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech’s hockey season ended yesterday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Minnesota-Duluth in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs scored late in the first period, added another midway through the third, and sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Blake Pietila made 22 saves.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at North Central University in Minneapolis yesterday, losing the opener 11-5, and dropping the nightcap 18-10.

The Lions are scheduled to play doubleheaders at Minnesota Morris this afternoon, and Crown College tomorrow.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team is scheduled to play doubleheaders at Wisconsin-LaCrosse tomorrow and Sunday.

College Volleyball

The Finlandia volleyball team has added a new recruit. Zoie McDonald played high school sports in Rhinelander.

Gibson Cup

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will open the annual Gibson Cup series tonight. Game one will begin at the Colosseum at 7:30. Game two will be played tomorrow at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. If needed, game three will be played Sunday at 5:00 at the Colosseum. All of the games will be broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and lost 5-2 to the New York Islanders last night. Pius Suter and Sam Gagner scored for Detroit. Thomas Greiss allowed three goals before leaving the game with an upper body injury at the end of the second period. Alex Nedeljkovic finished the game in net.

The Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Washington Wizards this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers scored all their runs in the sixth inning, and defeated the New York Yankees 5-2 in a rain-shortened spring training game yesterday. Jeimer Candelaria homered. Starter Casey Mize turned in three innings, gave up one hit, and struck out six.

The Tigers will face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. Tarik Skubal is scheduled to start.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 10-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. Starter Brandon Woodruff allowed four runs on six hits over three innings. Jonathan Singleton and Pablo Reyes homered.

The Brewers will play the Oakland Athletics this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start.
