High School

In high school hockey last night…
• Jeffers lost to Manistique 6-1. Cage Osterman scored the Jets’ only goal. Kasen Helminen took the loss in net.

At the Trenton Showcase downstate yesterday…
• Calumet grabbed an early lead on a Liam Pomroy goal, but lost to the Bay City Wolves 5-1. Hunter Touriniemi stopped 31 of 35 shots. Hear the game replay here.
• Hancock defeated Forest Hills Northern-Eastern 4-0.
• Houghton fell 2-1 to the top-ranked team in the state, Detroit Catholic Central. Jay Halonen scored the Gremlins’ only goal off a pass from Connor Arko in the second period. It was the first loss of the season for the Gremlins.

At the Showcase today…
• Houghton plays the Notre Dame Academy from Wisconsin at 11:00, with coverage starting around 10:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet faces Forest Hills Northern-Eastern 10:40, with coverage beginning around 10:20 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Hancock faces off against Livonia Stevenson at 11:20.

In boys basketball last evening…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell thumped Hancock 60-37. Danny Marcotte scored 19 for the Lakes, and Alex Pietila netted 12 for the Bulldogs.
• Jeffers shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 78-36. Matthew Schutz scored 31 for the Jets, and Levi Frahm added 20. Liam Tortillot led the Blue Bolts with 12 points, and Caleb Kentala chipped in 11.
• Ontonagon got past Bessemer 38-31.

On the girls schedule…
• Hancock stopped Gwinn 47-28.
• Jeffers outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 47-25.
• L’Anse lost at West Iron County 61-38.

The swim team will host Sault Ste. Marie today.

Longtime Calumet High School athletic director Sean Jacques has been selected as the 2024 honoree for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Charles E. Forsythe Lifetime Achievement Award. Jacques served as the Copper Kings’ AD for 14 years, until his retirement in 2022. His many contributions to the local community, and to athletics across the state, are listed here.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams visit Ferris State this afternoon.

Both NMU squads tip off at Lake Superior State today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 4-1 at Northern Michigan University last evening. Matthew Campbell scored the Huskies’ only goal on a power play. Arten Shlaime found the net twice for the Wildcats. Blake Pietila made 28 saves for Tech. Beni Halasz stopped 21 for NMU. That home-and-home series concludes tonight at 6:07 at the Student Development Complex.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Marquette Mutineers tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

Because of the all-star game break, the Red Wings are off until February 10th.

The All-Star Game will be played this afternoon. It actually consists of four squads of players, who will compete in two relatively short semifinal contests. The winners will face off in a championship game. The Red Wings are represented by Alex DeBrincat.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Clippers 136-125 last night. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 28 points, and Bojan Bogdanovic added 26. Jalen Duren grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Magic tomorrow afternoon, with coverage starting at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland’s plaque at the Baseball Hall of Fame will not include a team logo. Leyland led the Marlins to a World Series title, and brought the Tigers to the Fall Classic twice. He also managed the Pirates and the Rockies. He said he wanted to show equal respect to all four teams.
