Tech Hockey Earns NCAA Playoff Berth – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers boys basketball team will face Munising in the state quarterfinals tomorrow at 7:00. The site of the game has been moved from Escanaba to Negaunee. A rally for the Jets will be held this afternoon between 3:00 and 6:00 at the 1902 Tap and Grill in South Range, with free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and pop.

Youth Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association 10U AA Portage Lake Flyers lost 5-1 to the Saginaw Junior Spirit in the semifinals of the state tournament Port Huron yesterday. The Flyers went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the semifinals, defeating the Traverse City North Stars 5-1 and the Trenton Blades 5-1, and falling to the KV Renegades 7-1.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team has earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division One hockey tournament. The Huskies are seeded 10th in the 16-team tourney, and will open against eighth-seed Penn State Friday at 5:00 at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The University of Michigan will face Colgate in the other regional semifinal.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Panthers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

College Basketball

Michigan State advanced to the Sweet Sixteen the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament with a 69-60 victory over Marquette last evening. The Spartans will face Kansas State Thursday at 5:30.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Heat 112-100 last night. James Wiseman scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Detroit has lost 17 of their last 19 games.

The Pistons visit the Hawks tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers lost 2-1 to the Nationals yesterday. Starter Eduardo Rodriguez pitched shutout ball into the fifth, and gave up four hits. Both Washington runs came in the ninth. Spencer Torkelson singled home Detroit’s only run in the first inning.

The Tigers play the Blue Jays today. Michael Lorenzen will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, and shaded the Reds 4-3 yesterday. Starter Corbin Burnes pitched into the fifth, and allowed a run on five hits.

The Brewers face the Mariners this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will start for Milwaukee.

NFL

The Lions have reportedly reached an agreement with former Eagles’ safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson was considered the best defensive free agent left on the market.
