Tech Hockey Completes Sweep at Ferris – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school girls basketball Saturday, Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ishpeming 66-28. Jamie Hendrickson led the Lakes with 12 points..

Both Copper Country Christian School teams swept their double-headers against the Lake Tomahawk Northern Stars Saturday. The girls won their games 37-28 and 40-31. Sierra Jackson scored 17 in the opener, and Esther Bishop had 13 for the Warriors in the closer.

The boys won the first contest 39-30. Noah Bach scored 22. The Warriors then overcame an early 15-point deficit to edge the Northern Stars 38-37. Bach scored 19, including the game-winning jump shot.

In hockey Saturday, Calumet gave up four goals in the third period, and fell to Notre Dame De La Baie 5-3. An early goal by Alex Mattila, and two by Gabe Coppo gave the Copper Kings a 3-1 lead heading into the final stanza. Alex Studebaker made 24 saves.

Both Houghton High School swim teams placed third at the U.P. championships Saturday. Marquette won both meets, and Sault Ste. Marie cane in second. For the Gremlin boys, Archer Olson won the 200 and 500 freestyles, with Ty Hattaja second in the 500. Davin Evans and Samuel Fang placed one-two in the 100 breaststroke. See full results here.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Ferris State University with a tight 2-0 shutout Saturday night. Colin Swoyer broke a scoreless tie midway through the third period, and then added a final-minute empty-netter. Matt Jurusik made 36 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost to Bemidji State University 5-1 Saturday night.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams won their games at Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon. The women rode a big second quarter to a 75-61 victory. Ellie Mackay scored 17 points. The men overcame a slow start to defeat the Lakers 69-63. Trent Bell led the Huskies with 23 points. Kyle Monroe added 16, and became Tech’s all-time career scoring leader, breaking the record set by Larry Grimes in 1972.

Both Northern Michigan University teams lost at Ferris State Saturday – the women 68-56, and the men 71-68.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team ended its season with a 5-2 loss to Marian University Saturday. Cale Markham scored both FinnU goals. The Lions finish the campaign with a record of 5-18-2, and did not qualify for the NCHA playoffs.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team almost pulled out its first win of the season Saturday. Trailing 3-0 midway through the third period, the Lions got goals from Cassidy Becia and Kylee Dyni to close the gap to 3-2. Sarah Gundry made 36 saves. FinnU will host the Falcons again this afternoon. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team won its ninth straight game Saturday, shutting down Holy Family College in Manitowoc 87-32. Every Lion scored, led by Katie Lundeen with 27 points. The women’s team ends its regular season with a record of 14-11, and is seeded second at the upcoming ACAA tournament.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 87-70. Tristan Johnson led the Lions with 20 points.

The Finlandia softball team was held scoreless in its first two games at the annual Dome Classic at the Superior Dome Saturday night, falling 6-0 to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and 8-0 to Concordia-Wisconsin. The Lions will face Northland College and Wisconsin-Superior today.

GLHL

Logan Rastello netted five goals, as the Calumet Wolverines ripped the De Pere Deacons 12-4 Saturday night.

The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the West Bend Bombers 6-5 Saturday nigh. The Pios host the Deacons this afternoon at 1:00 at the Dee.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Boston Bruins 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Darren Helm scored Detroit’s only goal. Jonathan Bernier stopped 37 shots.

The Wings skate at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Because of Finlandia women’s hockey, coverage begins at 12:10 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons are off for the All-Star break, and return to action Thursday, when they host the Milwaukee Bucks. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
