Tech Hockey, Both Hoops Teams Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, at the Wisigan Cup event Saturday, Jeffers blanked Merrill 8-0. Matthew Halonen had a hat trick for the Jets. Nathan Wakeham, Luke Marcotte, Nolan Asiala, Keegan Rajala and Kyler Hillstrom also scored. Noah Nettel earned the shutout.

In high school basketball Saturday…
– The Copper Country Christian girls team shut down Delta County 55-26. Margaret Ensminger and Sierra Jackson each scored 12 for the Warriors.
– The Copper Country Christian boys team defeated the Knights 46-35. Noah Bach had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Ben Bishop added 13 points and nine boards.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team settled for a weekend split with Alabama-Huntsville, after a 3-1 loss Saturday night. After falling behind 209, Tommy Parrottino got one back for the Huskies midway through the third period. A late empty-netter put the game away for the Chargers.

The 15th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team completed a season sweep of Ferris State with a 5-2 victory Saturday.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost at Saginaw Valley State Saturday.

The women’s team took a quick early lead, but couldn’t keep the momentum in an 85-77 defeat. Abbie Botz scored 21 points and added 10 rebounds for the Huskies.

The Tech men’s team couldn’t hold a late lead, and fell to the Cardinals 73-69. Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 21 points.

Both Northern teams lost at Northwood Saturday – the women 48-40, and the men 76-64.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 9-1 at Wisconsin-Superior Saturday. India Charles scored the Lions’ only goal, as FinnU was outshot 69-11.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team, and both basketball teams, have the weekend off. 

GLHL

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Fond Du Lac Bears Saturday was not reported.

The Calumet Wolverines edged the Eagle River Falcons 4-3 in overtime Saturday. Eric Bausano scored the game-winner. Ian Carroll earned the win in net. Wolverines’ coach Bruce “Cukie” Coppo suited up and played a couple of shifts, making this the eighth decade in which he has skated for the Wolverines.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 1-0 to the New York Rangers last night. Jonathan Bernier returned from the injury list, and stopped 30 shots.

The Wings have lost eight straight, and entertain the Philadelphia Flyers Monday night. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Denver Nuggets this afternoon.

NFL

The San Francisco 49ers will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl this evening. Coverage will begin at 2:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
