High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Calumet fell to Brother Rice 3-2. After a scoreless opening period, each team scored twice in the second frame, with the Copper Kings getting goals from Liam Pomroy and Brendan Boberg. Zach Staelgraeve’s second tally of the night in the third period was the game-winner. Beau Jukuri made 29 saves, as the Warriors outshot the Kings 32-20. Hear the game replay here.
In high school swimming, Westwood, Kingsford and Gladstone joined Houghton at the annual Houghton Splash Saturday. Team scores were not compiled. Event winners for the Gremlins girls included Rose Dennis in the 200 freestyle, and Naomi Frahm in diving. Boys winners included Brett Gaff in the 200 butterfly, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relay team of Josh Bennett, Brett Gaff, Collin Raasio and Beau Haataja.
College Hockey
The MTU hockey team salvaged a tie in their weekend series against Lake Superior State with a 1-0 shutout Saturday night. Owen Baker netted the game’s only goal early in the third period. Ryan Manzella made 21 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout.
The Northern Michigan hockey team couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and fell 6-1 to 12th-ranked Minnesota State Saturday. Ryan Duguay scored the Wildcats’ only goal. Ryan Ouellette started in goal, but was relieved by Ethan Barwick after allowing three goals on nine shots in the 13 minutes. Barwick stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 74-57 decision to Roosevelt University Saturday. The Huskies were held to just four points in the second quarter, and six points in the third. Isabella Lenz let Tech with 14 points.
Pete Calcaterra scored a career-best 24 points, as the MTU men’s team swamped Roosevelt 82-59. Ty Fernholz added 16 points. The Huskies trailed by two at halftime, but outscored the Lakers 44-19 in the second half.
Both Northern teams had Saturday off.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers clobbered the Dane County Dairy Kings 13-5 Saturday.
The Calumet Wolverines lost 7-2 to the Eagle River Falcons.
NHL
The Red Wings entertain the Kraken this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 2:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Pistons got back on track with a 123-114 victory over the Raptors Saturday night. Tim Hardaway, Jr. scored 27 points. Cade Cunningham recorded a triple-double, with 22 points, 17 assists and 10 rebounds.
The Pistons have won nine of their last 11 games, and visit the Knicks Monday.
NFL
In the wild card round of the NFL playoffs.

With both their regular quarterbacks banged up, the Packers have activated signal-caller Sean Clifford from the practice squad for today’s game. Both starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis are expected to be ready, despite recent injuries.
