Tech Football Shreds NMU in Miner’s Cup Romp – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball Saturday…
• Calumet won the WestPAC tournament, defeating Houghton 2-0 (25-16, 25-13) in the title match. The Copper Kings advanced with wins over Iron Mountain 2-0 (25-10, 25-6) and Negaunee 2-0 (25-10, 25-16). On the day for Calumet, Allie Bjorn recorded 18 digs and18 kills, Sienna Anderson six digs and eight kills, Maddie Torola 10 digs and 10 kills, Jackie Kiilunen 12 digs and 11 kills, Caitlyn Strom 22 digs, 10 aces, 13 kills and four blocks, Laina Kariniemi 11 digs and 49 assists, and Gabby Anderson 10 digs and five aces. The Gremlins reached the championship match by defeating Ishpeming 2-1 (24-12, 19-25, 15-10), and Hancock 2-0 (25-12, 31-29).

The Houghton High School soccer team won the U.P. Division Two tournament at Marquette Saturday, with a 5-0 victory over the Marquette JV in the title match. Ethan Heckel had four goals for the Gremlins, Ian Hong added one. Jonah Falker earned the shutout in net. Houghton advanced to the championship by blanking Escanaba Bayside 3-0. Heckel, Finnian O’Neill, and Addison Hembroff each scored once.

College Football

Michigan Tech blasted Northern Michigan 62-0 in the annual Miner’s Cup game Saturday at the Superior Dome. The win was the most lopsided in the history of the rivalry. The Huskies rolled up 493 yards of total offense, while holding the Wildcats to just 85. Alex Fries threw two touchdown passes to Darius Willis, and ran for two more. William Marano rushed for two scores. It’s the 13th straight Miner’s Cup win for Tech.

College Hockey

The ninth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Alaska Saturday evening. Logan Pietila scored both Huskies’ goals in regulation, and added another tally as Tech won the unofficial shootout after a scoreless overtime. Blake Pietila made 21 saves.

The Northern Michigan hockey dropped an 8-5 decision at 17th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth Saturday.

College Volleyball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams completed play at the Midwest Regional Crossover in Hammond, Indiana Saturday…
• Tech pulled out a hard-fought 3-2 (13-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 15-13) victory over Findlay. Lindy Oujiri recorded 20 kills, Tess Hayes had 51 assists, and Amelia Albers had 20 digs in coach Matt Jennings’ 200th career win with the Huskies.
• Northern downed Cedarville 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 26-24), then fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16) to Missouri S&T.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will visit Davenport University today.

The Northern Michigan women’s team will face Grand Valley today. The Northern men’s team will also play at Davenport today.

NHL

The Red Wings outscored the Lightning 6-4 Saturday night. Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist. J.T. Compher had one goal and an assist. Ville Husso made 21 saves.

The Wings visit the Blue Jackets Monday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NFL

The Lions visit the Buccaneers in a 4:25 game today on 99.3 The Lift. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs will miss the game with a hamstring injury. Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is expected to return to the line-up.

The Packers have the weekend off.

The Bills welcome the Giants in the Sunday night game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The American League Championship Series begins tonight, as the Astros host the Rangers.
