Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last night…
• Crush outscored Superior Service 15-9. Olivia Shank was the winning pitcher. Emily Jokela with two triples and two home runs for Crush, and Laura Lyons had a double and a home run.
• Superior National Bank edged Tervo Agency 2-1. Rosalie Kangas struck out 12, and earned the win. Mel Baker struck out six, and took the tough loss. Rosalie Kangas had a double and a single for SNB.
• JB’s pounded Northern Michigan Land Brokers 23-0. Grace Brunet tossed the shutout. Brynn Arko had a triple and three singles for JB’s, Kaelyn Rouleau had four singles, Sadie Biekkola had a triple and two singles and Emma Perrala had three singles.

There is a make-up game scheduled for tonight…

• At the Stanton field, REL-Mohawk Technology and Houghton Building Supply-Stanton play a doubleheader beginning at 6.

College Football

The Ferris State University football team has been picked to win their fourth straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship this fall.

The preseason coaches’ poll released yesterday gave five votes to the defending NCAA Division II national champions. The other two votes went to perennial contender Grand Valley State, which placed second in the poll. Michigan Tech finished third in the voting, just ahead of Saginaw Valley State. Northern Michigan placed fifth, with Wayne State and Davenport University rounding out the voting.

NHL

The Red Wings have extended their agreement with their top farm team. The new deal keeps the Wings tied to the Grand Rapids Griffins through the 2026-2027 season. 

Newly-signed free agent defenseman Mark Pysyk will miss the start of the NHL season. The veteran recently underwent Achilles tendon surgery. Recovery is expected to take four to six months. To help fill the gap, Detroit has signed free agent defenseman Robert Hägg, who has spent NHL time with the Panthers, Sabres and Flyers.  

MLB

Eric Haase’s grand slam powered the Tigers to a 12-4 victory over the Padres last night. Haase’s shot was initially ruled a double, but a replay showed it cleared the fence. Jeimer Candelario hit two out, and Miguel Cabrera slugged his first homer in more than two months. Starter Drew Hutchison left in the fifth, after giving up all four San Diego runs. Will Vest got the win in relief.

The Tigers host the Padres again this evening. Garrett Hill will start against Mike Clevinger. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Hill was called back up from Toledo after the Tigers returned pitcher Rony García to the injured list. He left Sunday’s game early with arm pain.

The Tigers have signed their top pick from the 2022 amateur draft. Second baseman Jace Jung from Texas Tech was the 12th overall selection. Jung will head to Detroit’s spring training facility at Lakeland, Florida, to begin his professional career. Twelve of the Tigers’ 19 draft picks have now signed contracts, including Peyton Graham, the shortstop from Oklahoma whom Detroit selected in the second round.

The Brewers fell to the Rockies 2-0 last night. Aaron Ashby gave up both runs over seven innings, and took the tough loss.

The Brewers host the Twins this evening. Ethan Small has been called back up from Nashville to start against Dylan Bundy.
