Tech Football Claims Miner’s Cup; Hockey Opens Today – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school football yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell overcame an early 12-point deficit, and defeated Bark River-Harris 24-12. James Tuovila scored on a 55-yard touchdown run, Kellen Klein returned an interception 55 yards for a score, and Dominic Wagner caught a 24-yard touchdown pass.

Finlandia
Osvaldo Cruz scored three times, as the Finlandia University men’s soccer team blanked Great Lakes Christian College 10-0 yesterday. Albert Hammond had two goals. Tyler Borkadi, Tyler Dillon and Moises Membreno each had a pair of assists. The Lions outshot the Crusaders 50-1.

The Finlandia football team scored 40 points in the second and third quarters, and held on to defeat Lewis-Clark Valley 54-44 yesterday. De’Llontae Johnson ran for three touchdowns, and passed for two more. Johnson finished with 107 yards passing, and 171 yards rushing. Justin Woolever ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

The Finlandia volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) to Wisconsin-Platteville and 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-15) to Carroll College yesterday. Shannon Anderson led the Lions with 14 kills in the two matches. Jessie Diaz had 27 digs.

MTU
The MTU football team hoisted the Miner’s Cup high for the eighth straight season last night, after a 28-21 victory over Northern Michigan University. The Wildcats threatened to break the game open early, with two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Huskies responded in the second quarter, with James Henderson rushing for one touchdown, and Jake Brown hitting Jacob Wenzlick for another. Tech took the lead with a John Williams score in the third quarter.  After NMU closed the gap to one point, Brown found Ben Hartley in the end zone to provide the winning margin.

The Huskies volleyball team swept Wayne State 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-15) yesterday. MacAulay Peterson led Tech with 11 kills. Elle Heinonen collected 15 digs.

The MTU soccer team plays at Northwood University today.

The MTU hockey team begins its season this afternoon at the University of Wisconsin in the annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game. The game will be Joe Shawhan’s first as head coach of the Huskies.

MLB
Austin Romine played all nine positions yesterday, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Minnesota Twins 3-2. Buck Farmer gave up a run over five innings, and earned the win.

Romine became just the fifth major league player to field all nine positions in a single game. His biggest challenge came in the seventh inning at catcher, when he allowed a passed ball, and was moved to second base to complete the frame. He retired the only batter he faced as a pitcher in the eighth inning.

The Tigers play their last game of the season today at Minnesota. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against Bartolo Colon. Because of Detroit Lions football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 2:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ playoff hopes ended with a 7-6 loss to the Saint Louis Cardinals last night. Milwaukee opened a big early lead with a run in the second inning, and five in the third. Saint Louis closed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the third off Junior Guerra and Jeremy Jeffress, then put the game away with three runs of Josh Hader and Anthony Swarzak in the eighth.

The Brewers conclude their season at Saint Louis today. Aaron Wilkerson will start against Jack Flaherty.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their NHL preseason by edging the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout last night. P.A. Parenteau and Matt Lorito found the net in the shootout. Lorito and rookie Michael Rasmussen scored in regulation. Petr Mrazek and Jared Coreau split time in net.

The Wings open the regular season at the new downtown Detroit arena Thursday against the the Minnesota Wild. Hear the game on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Detroit Lions play a 1:00 game against the Vikings in Minnesota this afternoon. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan has been suspended for two games by the league for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams Thursday night. Adams suffered a concussion in the collision.
