Tech Football Claims Last-Minute Homecoming Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Football

Will Ark’s one-yard plunge with 27 seconds remaining gave Michigan Tech a 35-34 homecoming victory over Wayne State Saturday. The two teams combined for more than 900 yards in offense. Tech’s effort was through the air, with Ark completing 22 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors ran up out 440 yards on the ground. MTU’s Braxton Blackwell returned an interception 47 yards for a score.

Northern lost to Davenport 27-24 in overtime. The Wildcats scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take a late lead, but the Panthers tied the contest with a field goal with 37 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and kicked another on the first possession of overtime. Northern was unable to score on their overtime possession.

Finlandia fell 28-12 at Minnesota-Morris Saturday afternoon. Hunter Miles hit Jordin Haley with a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and Keveon McDonald scored on a one-yard plunge in the closing minutes.

College Volleyball

Michigan Tech swept Wayne State 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-19) Saturday. Jillian Kuizenga had 13 kills, Lina Espejo-Ramirez recorded 31 assists, and Carissa Beyer finished with 24 digs.

At the Mount Mary Triangular, Finlandia fell 3-0 to the host team and 3-0 to Maranatha Baptist Saturday.

College Soccer

Tech welcomes Davenport today at noon.

Finlandia’s women’s team lost 2-0 at Great Lakes Christian Saturday. The Lions men’s team spotted the Crusaders an early lead, then came back to claim a 2-1 victory. Alexis Murillo and Chinedu Ikem scored.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech suffered a 6-2 exhibition loss to the US National Under-18 Team Saturday in Plymouth. Nick Nardella and Ryland Mosely scored for the Huskies. Max Vayrynen made 22 saves.

Northern Michigan completed a sweep at Colgate with a 4-1 victory Saturday.

NHL

The Red Wings wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs Saturday night. Pius Suter scored Detroit’s only goal. The Wings begin regular-season play at home against the Canadiens on Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will host the Thunder in an exhibition Tuesday. Listen for selected Pistons games this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The MLB playoffs began yesterday.

• The Guardians blanked the Rays 1-0. Cleveland wins the series 2-0, and moves on to meet the Yankees.
• The Mariners came from seven runs down to edge the Blue Jays 10-9. Seattle takes that series 2-0, and will face the Astros in the next round.

In the National League…
• The Phillies dispatched the Cardinals 2-0. Philadelphia claims that series 2-0, and advances to face the Braves.
• The Mets defeated the Padres 7-3. That set is tied 1-1, and will be decided in New York tonight.

NFL

Today…
• The Packers play the Giants in London. Kickoff is at 9:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Lions visit the Patriots for a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift. The Patriots are expected to start rookie Bailey Zappe at quarterback, with veterans Brian Hoyer and Mac Jones injured.
• The Bengals visit the Ravens in the Sunday night contest on 99.3 The Lift.
