The Detroit Red Wings won their second straight game last night, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1. Jonathan Bernier sparkled in goal, making 37 saves. All the scoring came in the third period, with Adam Erne and Filip Zadina finding the net early, and Sam Ganger sealing the win with a late empty-netter.

The Wings entertain the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday.

Before the NHL trade deadline yesterday, Detroit sent forward Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals. In return, Detroit gets a first-round pick in the 2021 draft, a second-round pick in 2022, and forwards Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik. Vrana has 11 goals and 14 assists in 39 games this season. Panik has three goals and six assists in 36 games.

MLB

Casey Mize threw seven shutout innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Houston Astros 6-2 last night. Mize gave up just four hits on the way to his first major league win. Grayson Greiner, Renato Núñez and Akil Baddoo homered for Detroit. Baddoo’s blow was measured at 450 feet.

The Tigers continue that series at Houston tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Jake Odorizzi. Coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The left biceps strain that has sent Miguel Cabrera to the injured list has been diagnosed as “mild.” Manager A.J. Hinch said yesterday that some rest and rehab should have Cabrera back in the lineup soon.

The Milwaukee Brewers used one big inning to down the Chicago Cubs 6-3 last evening. All Milwaukee’s scoring came in the sixth inning, when the Crew sent 11 men to the plate. Luis Urías’ pinch-hit, bases-loaded double was the big blow. Freddy Peralta gave up a run on two hits over six innings, and struck out 10.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Kyle Hendricks.
