Team CC Wins National Tourney Opener – Friday Sports Wrap

Team CC
Team Copper Country opened defense of its national title with a 3-1 victory over the Green Bay Bobcats in Green Bay last night. Marquette’s Joe Phillips put Team CC on the board with a power play goal midway through the first period. Gabe Coppo added an unassisted tally two minutes later. Alex Nordstrom’s power play goal midway through the second period added some insurance. The Bobcats’ only score off Nick Voelker came late in the second. Voelker stopped 17 shots to earn the win. Team Copper Country will continue pool play at Green Bay tonight against McKinney, Texas. McKinney lost to the Wonderland Wizards 7-2 yesterday. Gibson Cup
The Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers will decide the Gibson Cup series with a third and final game tonight at Dee Stadium. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:45 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team was schedule to play doubleheaders at North Central University today and tomorrow, but they have been called off because of wintry weather.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers used a late surge to claim a 9-7, 10-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Starter Jordan Zimmermann struggled, and was charged with six runs on nine hits before leaving in the fifth inning. Detroit trailed 7-3 after the seventh, but got one back on Mikie Mahtook’s sacrifice fly in the eighth. They tied the game in the ninth with a two-run homer by Niko Goodrum, and a two-out RBI double by Victor Martinez. Leonys Martin drove in the game-winner with an infield grounder in the top of the 10th. Joe Jiménez got the win in relief, and Shane Greene earned the save. The Tigers have today off, and will play at Chicago again tomorrow. Michael Fulmer will start against Lucas Giolito. Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera left yesterday’s game in the first inning after falling while rounding first base. He bruised his left hip flexor, but says he hopes to be ready for tomorrow’s game.

The Milwaukee Brewers suffered their second straight shutout loss last night, falling 8-0 to the Chicago Cubs. Brent Suter gave up five runs over five innings, and took the loss. The Brewers continue that home set home set against the Cubs tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

Milwaukee closer Corey Knebel left last night’s game after injuring a hamstring while throwing a pitch in the ninth inning. He’s been placed on the 10-day disabled list.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens last night. Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Darren Helm scored for Detroit. Jared Coreau stopped 24 shots, and took the loss in net. The Wings wrap up their season with a home game against the New York Islanders tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
