Team CC Opens State Title Quest with Big Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

Team CC
Team Copper Country opened its quest for a state championship last night by routing the Kensington Valley Raiders 9-1. Sam Erkkila, Dawson McKay and Alex Nordstrom each scored twice, as Team CC outshot the Raiders 40-24. Play will conclude in Pool B today, with games against the Lansing Split Season team this morning at 10:30, and the Lansing Spartans this evening at 6:00. Both contests will be broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The Split Season team defeated the Spartans 3-0 in pool play last night. In Pool A, the Michigan Ice Hawks downed Belle Tire 6-2, and the Oakland Junior Grizzles pounded the Troy Sting 11-2. All the games are being staged at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. High School
The Chassell girls basketball team will face Adrian Lenawee Christian in the Class D state championship game this morning. Tipoff is at 10:00 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. The Panthers advanced with a 55-51 victory over Waterford Our Lady in the semifinals Thursday. Lenawee Christian defeated Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 46-44 in overtime in the other semifinal.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team concluded a sweep of its six games at the North Central University Dome Tournament in Plymouth, Minnesota, with three victories yesterday. In the first contest, the Lions edged Minnesota-Morris 6-4.  Harlie Caster and Emily Nguyen each had three hits. In the second game, FinnU blanked the host Rams 11-0. Kassandra Avila threw a two-hitter. The Lions closed the tourney with a 25-1 rout of Maranatha Baptist. Finlandia scored 18 runs in the first inning, and took advantage of 19 walks.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team will face Northern Michigan University for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association title tonight. The game will begin at 7:07 in Marquette. MTU is hosting a watch party at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Doors open at 6:00, and there is no charge.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak reached nine games last night, as they fell 4-2 to the Anaheim Ducks. Mike Green and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard took the loss in net. The Wings visit the Colorado Avalanche Sunday afternoon. Pregame coverage begins at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play the Trail Blazers in Portland tonight. Pregame coverage starts at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift. The Pistons have lost nine of their last 12 games.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies played to a 6-6 tie yesterday. Starter Daniel Norris gave up two runs on six hits over four innings. Jeimer Candelario and Nicholas Castellanos homered. The Tigers will face the New York Yankees this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Cincinnati Reds 16-13 yesterday. Starter Wade Miley struggled, allowing seven runs on 10 hits over three innings. Ji-Man Choi and Nick Franklin homered. The Brewers take on the Colorado Rockies this afternoon.

NFL
Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jordy Nelson has signed a two-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal. The 31-year-old Blount rushed for 766 yards with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. He’s known for his effectiveness in short-yardage situations. The Lions also re-signed running back Zach Zenner, and agreed to terms with free agent guard Kenny Wiggins, who played his last three seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Former Detroit linebacker Tahir Whitehead has signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders.

CC Oldtimers Tourney
The Copper Country Oldtimers Tournament continues through the weekend, with games at the Houghton County Arena, Dee Stadium, and the Calumet Colosseum. A $5.00 ticket gets you into as many games as you wish to see. Get the latest schedule and tournament information from their Facebook page.

In conjunction with the Oldtimers Tournament, both the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines have scheduled fundraisers today. The Pioneers will serve pancakes at Dee Stadium between 8:00 and noon. The Wolverines will serve spaghetti at the Colosseum between 11:00 and 6:00. Both of those teams return to action next weekend, as Calumet hosts the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament. We’ll broadcast all of their games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
