MLB – Tigers Fall to Rangers
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers 4-2 yesterday. Detroit carried a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, but Mitch Moreland’s two-run double off Tigers’ starter Matt Boyd put Texas up for good. Boyd gave up three runs over six innings, and took the loss. Reliever Blaine Hardy gave up a home run to Mike Napoli late in the game – the first homer he had allowed in 84 consecutive innings, dating back to June of 2014. Game details are here.
The Tigers play a makeup game at Cincinnati tonight. Buck Farmer will start against Keyvius Sampson. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Starting pitcher Shane Greene has been diagnosed with a problem with a blood vessel in his pitching shoulder. It’s called a pseudoaneurysm, and it’s responsible for the loss of feeling in his fingers that recently sent him to the disabled list. It may also explain why his effectiveness diminished through the season. Greene will see a specialist this week, and may need surgery.
The Washington Nationals ripped Milwaukee starter Matt Garza for seven runs, and pounded the Brewers 9-5. Garza left with two outs in the fifth inning, after giving up home runs to Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon. Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Lucroy homered for Milwaukee. Game details are here.
The Brewers have today off, and begin a series at Cleveland tomorrow night. Wily Peralta will pitch against Josh Tomlin.
NFL – Packers Lose Game, Nelson
The Green Bay Packers fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-19 in yesterday’s preseason game. The more serious loss, through, may have occurred in the first quarter, when receiver Jordy Nelson limped off the field. The preliminary diagnosis is a torn ACL. If an MRI confirms that today, he could be out for the season. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers also left the game after being sacked. Coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers suffered a bruise to his arm, and would likely have kept playing if it had been a regular-season contest. Game details are here.
The Packers’ next preseason game is Saturday night against the Eagles. The Detroit Lions play Friday night at Jacksonville.
The Lions have activated offensive tackle LaAdrian Waddle and defensive end Jason Jones off the physically unable to perform list. Waddle has been recovering from a torn ACL, and Jones had knee surgery in June. Both are projected to be starters. Running back Joique Bell is the only player still on the PUP list for Detroit.
