High School

In baseball yesterday…
• Calumet and Negaunee split their doubleheader. The Copper Kings took the first end 5-4. Alan Tarnowski got the win, and Cam Anderson drove in two runs. The Miners took the back end 10-3. Darin Berg had two hits.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell v Ironwood – no report.
• Jeffers swept L’Anse 10-2 and 2-1. Chase Kinnunen struck out five to earn the win in the opener. Levi Frahm, Cody Turner, Bryson Kangas all had multiple RBI. Lane Johnson held the Purple Hornets to just two hits in the nightcap.
• Ontonagon v Gogebic.

On today’s baseball schedule…
• Jeffers plays at Hancock, in a game that was rescheduled from April 27th.

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet and Westwood split a twinbill. The Copper Kings overcame a five-run deficit to win game one 11-8. The Patriots came back to take game two, 15-5.
• L’Anse and Jeffers split their doubleheader. The Purple Hornets took the first game 25-6. The Jets claimed game two 22-11.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Ironwood 14-0 and 16-1. Payton Goldsworthy threw a 15-strikeout no-hitter in the opener. Becca Lyons and Clara Colombe each had three hits, and Maddie Yaceczko had two. In the nightcap, Olivia Shank struck out nine. Goldsworthy had four hits, including a double. Jovie Daniels doubles, and Hailey Crouch had two hits.

In softball today…
• Houghton plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Jeffers.

At the Range Bank golf invitational at Wawanowin yesterday…
• Marquette won the boys tournament, with Houghton three shots off the pace. Calumet placed third, and L’Anse-Baraga seventh out of 11 participating teams. Cage Osterman from L’Anse medaled with a 71. Houghton’s Marino Pisani placed fourth, and Calumet’s Ryder Hodges sixth.
• Kingsford took the girls team title, with Calumet third, and Houghton seventh. The Copper Kings placed three in the top-10 – Maretta Kangas was fourth, Lily Keranen seventh, and Jayanne Kangas eighth.

Local golf teams will tee off at the Young’s Invitational in Iron River today.

In track and field…
• Houghton and Calumet will compete at the Division I regional at Negaunee.

NHL

In second-round NHL tournament play last night…
• The Bruins edged the Panthers 2-1. Florida leads that Eastern Conference set 3-2.
• The Oilers held off the Canucks 3-2. That Western conference series is tied 2-2.

Tonight…
• The Stars host the Avalanche. Dallas leads that Western Conference series 3-1.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• The Knicks routed the Pacers 121-91. New York takes a 3-2 lead in that Eastern Conference series.
• The Nuggets stopped the Timberwolves 112-97. Denver goes up 3-2 in that Western Conference series.

Tonight…
• The Celtics welcome the Cavaliers. Boston leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
• The Thunder entertain the Mavericks. That Western Conference set is tied 2-2.

MLB

Jesús Sánchez’ infield groundout in the top of the 10th inning drove home the only run of the game, as the Tigers fell 1-0 to the Marlins last night. Reese Olson turned in eight shutout innings, gave up just three hits, and struck out six.

The Tigers host the Marlins again this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Trevor Rogers. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Gio Urshela returned to the Detroit line-up last night, after missing a month with a strained hamstring. Akil Baddoo was sent back to Toledo to make room.

The Brewers scored four runs in the second inning, and held off the Pirates 4-3 last evening. Sal Frelick hit a two-run homer. Joe Ross gave up two runs through five innings.

The Brewers entertain the Pirates again this afternoon. Robert Gasser will start against Martín Pérez.

Milwaukee has placed Rhys Hoskins on the injured list. He tweaked a hamstring in Monday’s game. Owen Miller has been brought up from Nashville to fill in.
