Sweeps for Hancock Softball, Jeffers Baseball – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers swept Gogebic, 5-1 and 4-1. Levi Frahm struck out 12, and earned the win in the opener. Dean Jurmu got the win in the nightcap, and struck out six.
• L’Anse fell to Negaunee, 18-8 and 12-7.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Houghton plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

Tomorrow…
• Houghton plays at Iron Mountain.

In high school softball yesterday…
• Hancock pounded Gwinn 20-0 and 23-5. In the opener, Kaisa Salani had three hits, and Ellie Heinonen, Emilie Scholie, and Sadie Biekkola each had two. Biekkola was the winning pitcher. In game two, Heinonen had three hits and Biekkola had two. Sydney Scholie earned the win.

On today’s softball schedule…
• Houghton welcomes Iron Mountain.
• Calumet travels to Ishpeming.
• Hancock journeys to Ironwood.

In track and field…
• Houghton, Calumet and L’Anse will be among the teams competing at the Ontonagon Invitational today.
• Other local teams will compete at the Lakes Invitational in Lake Linden.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team will play doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Stout today and tomorrow.

Finlandia

Finlandia has named a couple of new coaches.

Ryan Gruszka will take over the ACHA men’s hockey team He was a graduate assistant with the ACHA hockey program at East Texas Baptist last season. The ACHA team is the club-level team at Finlandia. not the NCAA varsity squad.

Aaron Froelich has been named Director of Esports. Froelich is a former Finlandia baseball player. He has been leading the Esports program at Gogebic Community College.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team has released its schedule for the 2022-2023 season. After an exhibition match at the US National Development Program on October 8th, the Huskies will open the regular season October 14th and 15th at Alaska. Their home opener will be the following weekend against Bemidji State. Home-and-home matches against Northern are scheduled for December 2nd and 3rd, and January 27th and 28th. Series against Lake Superior State will take place November 11thand 12th in Houghton, and December 16th and 17th at Sault Ste Marie. The Huskies will skate at the Desert Classic at Arizona State in January. See the full schedule here.

NHL

NHL opening-round playoff action continued last night.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Rangers iced the Penguins 5-2. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Panthers defeated the Capitals 5-1. That set is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference…
• The Predators edged the Avalanche 2-1 in overtime. Colorado leads that series 2-0.
• The Stars blanked the Flames 2-0. That series is tied 1-1.

In the Eastern Conference tonight…
• The Bruins host the Hurricanes. Carolina leads that series 2-0.
• The Maple Leafs visit the Lightning. That set is tied 1-1.

In the Western Conference tonight…
• The Blues entertain the Wild. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Kings welcome the Oilers. That set is knotted 1-1.

NBA

The NBA conference semifinal playoff resume tonight…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Heat visit the 76ers. Miami leads that series 2-0.
• In the Western Conference, the Mavericks host the Suns. Phoenix is up 2-0 in that set.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros last night. Tarik Skubal turned in a quality start, giving up two solo home run over six innings, but took the loss. Jeimer Candelario’s two-out, two-strike, two-run homer in the top of the ninth tied the game, but Kyle Tucker’s single off Gregory Soto plated the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers visit the Astros again tonight. Beau Brieske will start against Luis Garcia. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

Miguel Cabrera collected his 3,007th career hit last night, tying him with Tigers legend Al Kaline for 31st on the all-time list.

The Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 yesterday. The Crew slugged six home runs, getting two from Willy Adames. Starter Adrian Houser struggled, giving up five runs over five innings, but still got the win.

The Brewers will visit the Atlanta Braves tonight. Eric Lauer will pitch for Milwaukee.
