Sweeps for Calumet, LL-H Softball – Tuesday Sports Wrap

In high school baseball yesterday…
 • Houghton edged Jeffers 3-2. Brett Heinonen’s two-run single with two out in the top of the seventh tied the game for the Jets. Nick Horning singled home the winning run for the Gremlins in the bottom of the seventh. Jonah Horning went the distance to get the win, striking out four.
• Calumet dropped both of its games against Iron Mountain, 10-6 and 16-0.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton fell to Negaunee 12-1 in the first game of their doubleheader. Results from the second game were not reported.
• Hancock lost both of its games against Westwood, 10-0 and 15-3.
• Calumet swept Ishpeming, 7-3 and 10-1. Elli Djerf got the win in the opening contest, giving up just four hits and a walk, and striking out seven. She also had two hits, including a triple. In the second game, Laura Giachino hit a three-run homer. Morgan Erkkila had two hits and drove in four runs, and Jana Loukus also had two hits. Taylor Vertin struck out seven, and got the complete game win.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell took two from the Gogebic Miners, 12-1 and 11-1. Olivia Shank struck out 10 to earn the win in the first game. Clara Colombe had two hits, and Becca Lyons hit an inside-the-park home run. Kara Kinnunen was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, and Marissa Sullivan had two hits.

On the softball schedule today…
• Houghton welcomes Ishpeming.
• Hancock entertains Baraga.
• L’Anse hosts Westwood.

Girls golf teams at L’Anse yesterday – no report.

The Houghton, Hancock and Calumet girls golf teams play at the West Iron County Invitational today.

The Copper Mountain Conference track meet will be held this afternoon at Lake Linden.

Horseshoes

On the opening night of Copper Country Horseshoe League play…
• Dreamland Two defeated Drift Inn 7-2.
• L and L downed Bucko’s 8-1.
• 41 Lumber got past Harter’s 6-3.
• Calumet One blanked Ahmeek Fire Department 9-0.
• Rocky’s edged Loading Zone 5-4.
• Dreamland One and Calumet Electronics delayed their match until tonight.

NBA

In the NBA tournament yesterday…
• The Bucks buried the Heat 132-98. Milwaukee takes a 2-0 lead in that series.
• The Nuggets outscored the Trail Blazers 128-109. That series is tied 1-1.

On tonight’s schedule…
• The Nets host the Celtics. Brooklyn is up 1-0 in that series.
• The Suns entertain the Lakers. Phoenix leads that set 1-0.
• The Clippers welcome the Mavericks. Dallas has a 1-0 lead in that series.

NHL

In the NHL playoffs…
• The Jets shaded the Oilers 4-3 in triple-overtime. Winnipeg wins that series 4-0.
• The Islanders edged the Penguins 3-2 in double-overtime. New York leads that series 3-2.
• The Maple Leafs got past the Canadiens 2-1. Toronto leads that set 2-1.
• The Panthers downed the Lightning 4-1. Tampa Bay holds a 3-2 lead in that series.
• The Wild defeated the Golden Knights 4-2. Vegas leads that series 3-2.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 6-5 to the Cleveland Indians last night. Spencer Turnbull gave up three runs over six innings, and left with the game tied. Cleveland scored three times off Bryan Garcia and Daniel Norris in the top of the seventh. A two-run Willi Castro homer in the bottom of the seventh made it close. Detroit loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Cleveland right fielder Jordan Luplow made a diving catch of an Eric Haase line drive to end the rally.

The Tigers host the Indians again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Aaron Civale. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Catcher Wilson Ramos has been returned to the injured list, still struggling with a back sprain. Pitcher Derek Holland was brought off the IL.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the San Diego Padres 5-3 last evening. Brandon Woodruff dominated the San Diego lineup for seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits, and striking out eight. The Padres scored three runs off Angel Perdomo and Josh Hader in the ninth, but Hader was able to shut down the rally, and earn the save. Manny Piña and Avisaíl García homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers entertain the Padres again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Joe Musgrove.

Milwaukee brought Keston Hiura back up from Nashville in time for last night’s game. Pitcher Alec Bettinger was sent down. The Crew also reinstated utility player Jace Peterson from the injured list, and then designated him for assignment.
