MLB
Trey Sweeney hit his first major league home run last night, as the Tigers outscored the Cubs 8-2. Sweeney’s long drive to deep center bounced back onto the field. As he stopped at third base, umpires conferred, and agreed the ball had cleared the Wrigley Field wall, then ricocheted back, making it a home run. Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter also homered, and Parker Meadows had three hits. Beau Brieske opened the game with two scoreless innings. Brant Hurter relieved him, gave up both Chicago runs, but got the win.
The Tigers conclude that series in Chicago this afternoon. The Tigers will deploy their bullpen again. Justin Steele will pitch for the Cubs. Coverage will begin at 1:55 on 99.3 The Lift.
Nolan Arenado’s grand slam off Trevor Magill in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Cardinals a 10-6 victory over the Brewers last evening. Milwaukee led by two heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Devin Williams walked two St. Louis batters with the bases loaded to tie the contest. Jackson Chourio had four hits, including a triple.
The Brewers wrap up that series at St. Louis this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against Miles Mikolas.
College Soccer
The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team has been picked for last place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall. In the preseason poll released yesterday, league coaches made Parkside the favorite to win the title, but only by a single vote over Purdue-Northwest.
