MLB

The Tigers’ bats were quiet in a 4-0 loss to the Astros last evening. The game was a pitchers duel until Houston broke through with four runs off Detroit ace Tarik Skubal in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Astros’ Hunter Brown gave up five hits over seven innings, and struck out nine.

The Tigers visit the Astros again today. Jack Flaherty will start against Justin Verlander. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit shortstop Javier Báez has received an injection to help alleviate his lower back problem, and will be evaluated again early next week.

The Brewers’ late comeback fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Reds last night. Freddy Peralta labored into the sixth inning, allowing six runs on 10 hits. Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Joey Ortiz drew a bases-loaded walk. Jackson Chourio’s single plated Willy Adames, but Jake Bauers was thrown out at home plate. William Contreras homered earlier in the game.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Bryse Wilson will pitch against Andrew Abbott.

NBA

The Mavericks kept their season alive with a 122-88 win over the Celtics last night. Boston leads the NBA championship series 3-1, with game five Monday in Boston.

The Pistons have hired a new assistant coach. Fred Vinson joins the staff after 14 years with the Pelicans, where he worked under new team president Trajan Langdon. Vinson is widely respected for his ability to improve shooting. The move would seem to confirm that Monty Williams will be kept on as head coach, although no announcement has been made.

NHL

The Stanley Cup could be decided tonight, when the Oilers host the Panthers. Florida leads the series 3-0.

Running

Zebedee Swager of Houghton won last evening’s Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k Run, with a sizeable 33-second margin over Nik Thomas of Dollar Bay. Eric Weiss of Houghton came in third. Kristen Monahan of Houghton claimed the women’s title, and placed 12th overall. Rayna Towles of Hancock was the women’s runner-up. See full results here.
