High School
In high school hockey last night, the Lake Superior Conference Tournament opened at MacInnes Arena. In the first semi-final game, Jeffers defeated Kingsford 5-2. In the second game, L’Anse took Negaunee to triple-overtime, before falling 5-4. The Purple Hornets will face the Flivvers at 1:00 this afternoon on the consolation game. The Jets and Miners will play in the championship match at 3:00.
The girls’ high school basketball regular season wrapped up last night…
– Hancock shut down Ironwood 50-16.
– Dollar Bay edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 47-43.
In boys’ action last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated Calumet 71-38, and improved their record to 19-0.
– Hancock jumped out to a quick lead, and defeated West Iron County 46-31. Chad Raasio led the Bulldogs with 14 points off the bench. The Hancock defense held the Wykons to just 10 points in the first half.
– Houghton lost at Westwood 60-51. See video highlights from the game here.
– Jeffers defeated Ontonagon 58-38.
– Chassell got past Dollar Bay 68-65.
– Baraga downed Watersmeet 57-43.
MTU Ties Minnesota State
In the battle for the top spot in the WCHA, third-ranked Michigan Tech and second-ranked Minnesota State fought to a 1-1 tie Friday night. Jamie Phillips stopped a career-best 43 shots in goal for the Huskies. Tech still trails the Mavericks by one point in the WCHA standings. Those teams play again tonight in Mankato.
NMU Blanks LSSU
The Northern Michigan hockey team shut out Lake Superior State 5-0 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight.
Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s basketball team is the top seed at the Great South Athletic Conference tournament this weekend. The tourney is being played at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. The Lions will face the host team in the semifinals this afternoon at 4:00. Salem and Pine Manor will meet in the other semifinal today. The championship game will be played tomorrow at 1:00.
Finlandia’s Marissa Burke has been named the GSAC Player of the Year. Burke led the conference in scoring at 18.4 points per game while also finishing second overall in free throw shooting percentage at 75%.
Lions’ coach Terry Klemett was named Coach of the Year. In his first season at the helm of the Lions program, Klemett guided Finlandia to a 13-10 overall record.

The Finlandia softball team opens its schedule this weekend by hosting the annual Dome Tournament in Marquette. The Lions will face Edgewood College this morning at 8:00… Wisconsin-Superior at 9:45… Carroll University this afternoon at 3:00… and Lake Superior State at 4:45. Tomorrow, the Lions will meet Marian University at 8:00… and Concordia-Wisconsin at 1:15.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fond du Lac Bears 6-5 in a shootout Friday night. The Bears scored four goals in the third period to force overtime. Josh Harju had two goals and two assists for Calumet. The Wolverines will welcome Eagle River for games tonight at 7:30, and tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
The Portage Lake Pioneers host Fond du Lac tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL – Red Wings Visit Nashville
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Nashville this afternoon Face-off is at 3:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Fall to Knicks
The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold a five-point lead in the final minute, and wound up losing to the Knicks 121-115 in double overtime last night. Detroit led by as many as 18 points in the first half. Greg Monroe led the Pistons with 28 points. Detroit plays at Washington tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Magnusson Leads CopperDog 150
2013 champion Bruce Magnusson leads this year’s CopperDog 150 dogsled race after the first leg on Friday night. Magnusson traveled the course from Calumet to Eagle Harbor in 3:53.52. Al Borak is 1:23 off the pace in second place. Frank Holmberg, 2012 champion J.R. Anderson, and Joanna Oberg fill out the top five. Defending champion Jake Golton is 10th. Among local mushers, Tom Bauer is in 12th place, and Chad Grentz and Becky Bean are 20th and 21st. Mushers will travel from Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor today… and back to Calumet on Sunday. Sturmer Repeats at CopperDog 40
Matt Sturmer of Bruce Crossing on his second-straight CopperDog 40 race Friday night. Sturmer completed the run from Calumet to Eagle River in 3:29:15, six minutes ahead of Chad Schouweiler, and 10 minutes better than his winning time last year. Lynne Witte, Blair Braverman and Cynthia Sturmer rounded out the top five, with Calumet’s Jerry Trudell placing sixth. Local musher Greg Raskind finished ninth. See full CopperDog 40 results here.
