High School
In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton shut down Saginaw Heritage 5-1. The Gremlins opened an early lead with first period goals by Mike Maillette and Grant Schaible. Maillette scored again in the second period. Heritage got one back early in the third period, but Tanner Flachs scored on a power play and Jace DeForge added a late empty-netter. Houghton outshot Heritage 40-21, and improves to 8-0 on the season.
• Calumet took an early lead, but fell to University Liggett 3-2. Liam Pomroy found the net in the first period. After the Knights tied the game early in the second period, Ted Loukus put the Copper Kings back on top. Liggett re-tied the game with a penalty shot in the third period, and netted the game-winner with just 15 seconds left in regulation. In hockey today…
• Hancock welcomes Saginaw Heritage for a 1:00 game.
• Unbeaten Jeffers hosts University Liggett in a 1:00 contest.
In girls basketball last night…
• Houghton lost at Negaunee 54-41. Clea Ollanketo had 13 points and five steals for the Gremlins. Danica Ryynanen added 11 points. Ella Mason scored 30 for the Miners.
• Calumet got past West Iron County 53-51.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Baraga 48-45. Cleo Milkey led the Lakes with 22 points. Kara Roberts had 13 for the Vikings.
• Chassell shaded Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 42-39.
At a three-team high school swim meet at Gladstone yesterday, the Houghton boys topped the Braves 124-98. The girls lost a close 113-110 battle to the Braves. Rudyard finished a distant third in both meets.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team spotted Northern Michigan an early lead, then came back to claim a 4-2 victory last evening. After Colby Ens found the net for the Wildcats, the Huskies erupted with second-period goals by Logan Pietila, Arvid Caderoth and Jack Works. Reilly Funk narrowed the gap for Northern in the third period, but Isaac Gordon’s late goal sealed the win for Tech. Blake Pietila stopped 29 shots for the Huskies. Beni Halasz made 35 saves for the Wildcats.
Those teams face off again tonight at 6:07 in Marquette.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will host Wayne State today, with the women’s tip-off at 1:00, and the men’s at 3:00.
Both NMU teams will entertain Saginaw Valley State.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers will face the Marquette Mutineers today at 3:30 at the Ontonagon Ice Rink.
The Calumet Wolverines visit the Eagle River Falcons tonight.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Senators tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons’ team-record losing streak hit 19 last night, with an ugly 123-91 loss to the Magic. Cade Cunningham scored 21 points.
The Pistons host the Pacers Monday.
NFL
The Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers face the Giants Monday night in New York.
MLB
The Tigers have added some depth with a couple of minor league deals. Pitcher Brenan Hanifee returns. He spent most of last season with the Mud Hens, before a brief late-summer call-up to Detroit. He became a free agent after he was designated for assignment last month, but elected to stay with the Tigers’ organization. Detroit also signed 33-year-old catcher Anthony Bemboom, who has played just a handful of major league games in his career, most recently with the Orioles.
