High School
Livonia Stevenson reigns as the champion of the MacInnes Holiday Tournament, following a 3-1 victory over Houghton in the title game Saturday. Garrett Teehan and Christian Lang turned first-period Gremlins turnovers into Spartan goals. Teegan Tapani got one back for Houghton in the second period, but Owen Hall’s short-handed tally in the third period sealed Stevenson’s first MacInnes title since 1977.
Hancock grabbed a quick early lead, and outscored Calumet 6-4 in the consolation game. The Bulldogs led 4-2 at the end of the first period, with goals from Tevin Stukel, Max Heinonen, Brady Axford and Connor Helminen. Erik Loukas and Ben Anderson found the net for Calumet. The teams traded goals for the rest of the contest. Brendan Boberg scored twice for the Copper Kings. Ben Keranen and Jackson Sintkowski rounded out the Bulldogs’ scoring.
Hall was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Members of the All-Tournament team include forwards Boberg of Calumet, Stukel of Hancock, and Brody Donnelly of Houghton; defensemen Hudson Markham of Houghton and Dawson Wallis of Stevenson, and Stevenson goalie Lucas Rorabacher.
Calumet won the JV tournament with a double-overtime win over Houghton.
In girls basketball, at the Negaunee Irontown Holiday Bash…
- Ewen-Trout Creek routed Kingsford 55-26 in the consolation contest.
- Negaunee took the title, with a 50-41 victory over Ludington.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens the Great Lakes Invitational against sixth-ranked Western Michigan University this afternoon at 3:30. Top-ranked Michigan State will play Northern Michigan University in the other semifinal at 7:07. The consolation and championship matches will be staged tomorrow.
NBA
The Pistons dropped a 134-121 shootout to the Nuggets Saturday night. All 13 Detroit players active for the game scored, with Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey leading the effort with 17 points each.

The Portage Lake Pioneers completed a sweep of their home-and-home weekend series against the Calumet Wolverines with a 5-4 victory Saturday night at the Colosseum.
NFL
In Saturday’s NFL games…
- The Chargers routed the Patriots 40-7.
- The Bengals kept their playoff hopes alive with a 30-24 overtime win over the Broncos.
- The Rams got past the Cardinals 13-9. Ahkello Witherspoon’s diving interception of a Kyler Murray pass in the endzone with 37 seconds remaining preserved the win.
Today, the Packers visit the Vikings for a 4:25 contest.
The Lions visit the 49ers for the Monday night game, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
Tigers great Charlie Maxwell has died. Maxwell patrolled the outfield for six seasons for Detroit, and was an All-Star in 1956 and 1957. He grew up in southwest Michigan, which provided his nickname, “Paw Paw.” He gained a reputation for hitting home runs on Sundays. He also spent time with the Red Sox, Orioles and White Sox. Maxwell had been the Tigers’ oldest alum, at age 97.
