State Farm Earns Narrow Twilight Win – Friday Sports Update

MLB
The Detroit Tigers staked Michael Fulmer to an early lead, and cruised past the Kansas City Royals 7-3 yesterday afternoon. Justin Upton’s three run homer in the first inning started the attack. Ian Kinsler hit one out in the third, and Andrew Romine found the seats in the fourth. Fulmer pitched shutout ball through eight innings. He tired in the ninth, as K-C scored three times. Justin Wilson came in to get the final out.

Villar

The Tigers open a weekend series against the Cleveland Indians tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Josh Tomlin. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers slammed six home runs, as they routed the Cincinnati Reds 11-3 last evening. Jonathan Villar went deep twice, and Jesús Aguilar, Ryan Braun, Manny Piña and Domingo Santana each hit one out. Jimmy Nelson gave up two runs and struck out 11 over seven innings to earn the win.

The Brewers host the Miami Marlins tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Edinson Volquez.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm edged Wolverine-Orbit 3-2. Kyle Storm had two hits for State Farm, and singled home the winning run in the fifth inning. Morgan Impala pitched a complete game for the win.
– The game between REL-Mohawk Technologies and Superior National Bank-Stanton was canceled because of poor field conditions.

Former Michigan Tech hockey goalie Pheonix Copley has signed a new two-year contract with the Washington Capitals. It’s a two-way contract for next season, and a one-way deal for the 2018-2019 campaign. If he stays with the Capitals the entire time, the contract will be worth 1.2-million dollars.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball schedule for the 2017-2018 season has been released. The Huskies will play 15 home games, beginning November 11th against Wisconsin-Parkside. Tech will play home and away games against both of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s new teams, Davenport University and Purdue-Northwest. The Huskies will face Northern Michigan University in Marquette on December 17th, and in Houghton on January 27th. Learn more about the new schedule here.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons have extended their relationship with the Grand Rapids Drive development team for two more seasons. They also moved former Drive coach Rex Walters to Detroit, where he’ll assist Stan Van Gundy. Rob Werdann will become head coach of the Drive. He’s been on the Pistons’ scouting staff the past several seasons.
