Twilight League Baseball
Houghton Building Supply-Stanton won the Copper Country Twilight Baseball League tournament yesterday, downing Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 4-1 in the title match.
Coldwell Banker stunned top-seed Garnet Garage 2-1 in eight innings in the day’s first semifinal. Stanton walked off with a 2-1 win over REL-Mohawk Technology in the second semifinal.
The title game was scoreless until Stanton batted around and scored three times in the third. Carson Turner’s home run in the fourth provided Coldwell Banker’s only score.
MLB
The Tigers blanked the Angels 4-0 yesterday. Eduardo Rodriguez returned from his long personal leave to toss five scoreless innings. He gave up four hits. Riley Green had two hits, including a home run. Victor Reyes had a triple, and drove in two runs.
The Tigers have today off, and host the Giants tomorrow night. Drew Hutchison will start against Carlos Rodón. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Tiger John Wockenfuss has died. Wockenfuss began his career as a catcher, but eventually played in the outfield and at first base, as well. On the eve of the 1984 season, Detroit traded Wockenfuss and outfielder Glenn Wilson to the Phillies for reliever Willie Hernandez and first baseman Dave Bergman. Hernandez won the Cy Young and was named American League MVP as Detroit won the World Series. Wockenfuss eventually managed for a few years in the Tigers’ minor league system. He was 73 when he passed away Friday, after battling dementia he believed was brought on by the number of collisions he suffered while blocking home plate.
The Brewers came from behind to down the Cubs 5-2 yesterday. Brandon Woodruff pitched into the sixth, and gave up both Chicago runs. Milwaukee scored all their runs in the final three innings, with help from a home run from Rowdy Tellez, and two from Keston Hiura.
The Brewers visit the Dodgers tonight. Eric Lauer will pitch against Julio Urías.
