High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Hancock took two from Bark River-Harris, 10-0 and 13-6. Sadie Biekkola tossed a five-inning two-hitter in the opener, and struck out eight. The Bulldogs broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Brooke Koskela and Kaelyn Rouleau each had two hits and drove in two runs. In the nightcap, Megan Pelto homered, doubled, drove in four runs, and scored three times. Diem Kilpela went the distance to get the win in the circle.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Gogebic, 14-2 and 7-5. Payton Goldsworthy struck out 12 in the first game. Olivia Shank had two doubles and a single, and Clara Colombe had a single and a double. Ashlyn Steves earned the win in the second contest. Goldsworthy had a single and a double. Becca Lyons and Marissa Sullivan each had a double.
• L’Anse split with Ironwood, taking game one 11-8, and dropping game two 19-4.

At the Negaunee Lions Invitational track tournament yesterday…
• Houghton finished sixth on the boys side. Luke Hill took second place in the 1600-meter run, and fourth in the 3200. The 4×800 relay team placed second.
• On the girls side, Houghton placed fourth. Tessa Rautiola and Roman Trevino Peterson took the top two spots in the 1600-meter run, and Rautiola also won the 3200. Lily Ross placed second in the 800-meter run.

In second-round NHL tournament play last evening…
• The Panthers dumped the Bruins 6-2. Florida leads that Eastern Conference series 2-1.
• The Oilers slid past the Canucks 4-3 in overtime. That Western Conference series is tied 1-1.

• The Hurricanes welcome the Rangers. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-0.
• The Avalanche host the Stars. That Western Conference series is tied 1-1.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last night…
• The Pacers got past the Knicks 111-106. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 2-1.
• The Nuggets outscored the Timberwolves 117-90. Minnesota leads that Western Conference set 2-1.

Tonight…
• The Celtics host the Cavaliers. That Eastern Conference set is tied 1-1.
• The Mavericks welcome the Thunder. That Western Conference series is tied 1-1.

MLB

The Tigers’ struggles continued with a 5-2 loss to the Astros last night. Detroit took an early lead with a two-run double by Matt Vierling. Houston got one back in the sixth, then plated four runs off Andrew Chafin and Jason Foley in the eighth. The collapse spoiled a good start by Casey Mize, who allowed a run on five hits over six frames.

The Tigers have lost six of their last seven, and host the Astros again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Cristian Javier. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blasted the Cardinals 11-2 last night, and they did it without a home run. Jake Bauers blasted a two-run triple. Willy Adames had three hits. In his major league debut, starter Robert Gasser turned in six shutout innings, allowing just two hits.

The Brewers entertain the Cardinals again tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Kyle Gibson.

Gasser was brought up from Nashville on a busy day for the Milwaukee personnel department. Pitcher Janson Junk was also recalled. Pitcher Tobias Myers was sent down. Pitcher Joel Payamps was placed on the Bereavement List. Pitcher Corbin Martin was designated for assignment, and the Brewers purchased the contract of pitcher Mitch White from the Giants.
