SNB-Stanton Wins Twilight Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

MLB

Tarik Skubal gave up a lead-off home run to César Hernández, then struck out five of the next eight batters he faced, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4 yesterday. Skubal reached his pitch count in the third inning, and gave way to Daniel Norris, who turned in nearly four scoreless innings, and earned the win. Cleveland’s final three runs came off Joe Jiménez in the ninth. Niko Goodrum, Jorge Bonifacio and Grayson Greiner homered for Detroit.

The Tigers took two of their three games at Cleveland over the weekend – the first series win they’ve had against the Indians since September, 2018.

Detroit opens a home set against the Chicago Cubs tonight. Casey Mize will start against Alec Mills.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ losing streak reached four games yesterday, as they fell 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Crew led by one late in the game, but Gregory Polanco’s two-run homer off David Phelps in the bottom of the eighth gave the Pirates the win. Justin Smoak homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers begin a home series against the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Brett Anderson will pitch against Trevor Bauer.

NHL

In the NHL yesterday…
• In the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Bruins edged the Lightning 3-2. Boston takes a 1-0 lead in that series.
• In the Western Conference semifinals, the Golden Knights blanked the Canucks 5-0. Vegas opens a 1-0 lead in that series.

Today…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Islanders and Flyers begin their series.
• In the Western Conference, the Stars face the Avalanche. Dallas has a 1-0 lead in that set.

NBA

In the NBA playoffs…

In the Eastern Conference yesterday…
• The Celtics got past the 76ers 110-106. Boston sweeps that opening-round series 4-0.
• The Raptors buried the Nets 150-122. Toronto advances with a 4-0 series win.

Today…
• The Bucks take on the Magic. Milwaukee leads that series 2-1.
• The Pacers face the Heat. Miami has a 3-0 lead in that series.

In the Western Conference yesterday…
• The Mavericks shaded the Clippers 135-133 in overtime. That series is tied 2-2.
• The Jazz edged the Nuggets 129-127, Utah leads that series 3-1.

Today…
• The Rockets take on the Thunder. Houston leads that set 2-1.
• The Lakers face the Trail Blazers. L-A has a 2-1 advantage in that series.

Twilight League

Tyler LaDuron struck out 14 of the 18 batters he faced, as Superior National Bank-Stanton blanked REL-Mohawk Technology 10-0 in the Copper Country Twilight League championship game yesterday. Connor Hannon scored in the first inning, then added RBIs in his next two at bats to put the Wildcats in front 3-0 at the halfway point. The Wildcats broke the game open with three in the fifth inning, and ended the game early with four more in the bottom of the sixth.

SNB-Stanton advanced to the title game by blanking Dean Kangas 8-0 in yesterday’s first semifinal. Cole Jepson and Eli Louma combined to strike out 15 batters, and Burr Nettle blasted a three-run homer.

REL reached the final with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Garnet Garage-Subway.

Horseshoe League

The Copper Country Horseshoe League tournament will wrap up tonight…
• Dreamland One will face L and L in the championship match at Rocky’s Bar.
• Calumet One will play Harter’s Party Store in the consolation match at the Drift Inn.
