Matthew Boyd has rejoined the Detroit Tigers at their training camp in Detroit. Boyd had been sidelined after coming into contact with someone who was COVID-19 positive. Boyd’s subsequent test showed he is not infected. Boyd is likely to be Detroit’s starter on opening day, a week from tomorrow in Cincinnati. Hear all of Detroit’s games on 99.3 The Lift.
Boyd was one of the two starters in last night’s intra-squad scrimmage. He gave up a solo home run to Grayson Greiner in the first inning, but settled down. Ivan Nova was the other starter. Ha allowed three runs over four innings. Outfielder Riley Greene made a diving catch, and hit a home run.
The Tigers have added two more pitchers to their 60-man player pool. Alex Lange was a seventh-round Tigers draft choice in 2019. Zack Hess was a first-round pick by the Cubs in 2017, and came to Detroit in the Nicholas Castellanos trade. Neither is likely to make the opening day roster.
The Milwaukee Brewers held second baseman Keston Hiura out of their scrimmage yesterday because of arm fatigue. Team officials say the scratch was precautionary. Starter Brett Anderson left after two innings because of a blister on his throwing hand.
Slow Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last evening…
• Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s swept a doubleheader against Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics, 25-19 and 19-15.
• Bucko’s/Labatts fell to McGann’s/Northern Auto 20-11, then routed Monte/Coke/UP Splice 30-10.
• A and S Industrial shut down Koppers 19-4, then lost to Downtowner Two 15-10.
Twilight League
Both of tonight’s scheduled Twilight League baseball games have been postponed.
College Hockey
The revitalized Central Collegiate Hockey Association could be getting another member. The University of Saint Thomas in Minnesota has received permission from the NCAA to jump its athletic programs directly from Division Three to Division One. Saint Thomas was recently kicked out of the D-III Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference because it has grown to more than 6,000 students – far larger than the other league members. This will be its final season in the MIAC. Most of the Tommies’ sports will then join the Summit League, with football heading to the Pioneer League. The women’s hockey team will join the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. No affiliation for the men’s hockey squad has been finalized, but new CCHA commissioner Don Lucia recently said that his league would be interested.
