Alfredo Simon pitched into the seventh inning and gave up just one run yesterday, but the Detroit Tigers eventually lost to the Braves 4-2. Yoenis Cespedes homered for Detroit. Joba Chamberlain gave up two runs in the eighth inning, and took the loss. Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless ninth inning. The Tigers face the Pirates this afternoon. David Price will make his final spring training start.
Justin Verlander will miss his final start of the spring on Thursday. Verlander left Friday’s game with a cramp in a triceps muscle. It was still sore after he threw a sideline session on Sunday. He’s still hoping to be ready for his first regular-season start, which is scheduled for a week from Thursday.
The Tigers sent eight players down to the minors yesterday. One was catcher Bryan Holaday, who spent all of last season as Alex Avila’s backup in Detroit. James McCann fill that role as the season opens. Outfielder Tyler Collins was also sent down. Collins made the Tigers’ opening day roster last season, but spent most of the year in the minors.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will play the Reds this afternoon.
