MLB – Tigers Shade Yankees
The Detroit Tigers scored two runs in the seventh inning, and edged the New York Yankees 2-1 last night. Alfredo Simon gave up a solo homer to Mark Teixeira in the second inning… then held them scoreless until leaving with two runners on base and one out in the eighth inning. Joba Chamberlain got a double play to end the inning, and Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth. Detroit scored both of its runs in the seventh, on singles by J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes.

The Tigers continue that home set against the Yankees tonight. Kyle Lobstein will start against Nathan Eovaldi.

An MRI has confirmed that pitcher Justin Verlander has a strained right triceps muscle. The team ordered the exam after the injury took longer than expected to heal. It showed no structural damage.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 last night. Milwaukee collected only three hits, including Ryan Braun’s first homer of the year. Wily Peralta gave up all six Cincinnati runs over seven innings.

The Brewers’ woes worsened when catcher Jonathan Lucroy left in the first inning after taking a foul ball off his foot. He’s headed to the disabled list with a broken toe. Second baseman Scooter Gennett also missed the game, after cutting his hand in the shower earlier in the day. Gennett needed five stitches to close the wound, and may also be headed to the DL.

The Brewers continue that home set against the Reds tonight. Mike Fiers will start against Jason Marquis.

Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Finlandia Baseball Splits
The Finlandia University baseball team split two games at North Central University yesterday afternoon… winning the first game 5-2, and dropping the nightcap 11-10. Jordan Windahl went the distance in the first game, and gave up just two hits to earn the win. The Lions play two more at North Central today.
