Showcase Wins for Gremlins and Kings, but ‘Dogs Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, Calumet, Houghton and Hancock wrapped up play Saturday at the Trenton MIHL Showcase.
– Houghton held off Cranbrook 2-1. Camden Markham and Tucker Tapani scored in the second period for the Gremlins. Jimmy Pietila made 18 saves.
– Calumet came from behind to edge Trenton 2-1. Scott Loukus scored both Copper Kings goals in the second period. Alex Studenaker made 22 saves.
Hancock lost to Warren de la Salle 5-4. Paul Lorenzetti, Petr Anderson, Dominick Pizzi and Austin Salani scored for the Bulldogs. de la Salle’s Nick Twombley scored on a penalty shot at the end of regulation to break the tie.

Jeffers earned a 4-2 victory at Ashland Saturday. Caleb Klein, David Storm, Luke Marcotte and Nathan Wakeham scored for the Jets. Simon Rajala made 29 saves.

In a co-ed game basketball game Saturday morning, Copper Country Christian defeated Grand Marais 58-21. Margaret Ensminger led the scoring with 16, while Danelle Leinonen had 14.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

Alex Smith’s overtime goal lifted the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday night. Brian Halonen scored twice, and was named the Winter Carnival Series Most Valuable Player. Alec Broetzman also scored for the Huskies, and Robbie Beydoun made 39 saves. While the Huskies split the series, the MacInnes Trophy went to the Lakers, who outscored Tech 10-7 in the two games.

The 15th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 1-0 at third-ranked Minnesota State Saturday night.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost 80-66 to Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon. The Rangers outscored the Huskies 24-12 in the second quarter to take control. Cassidy Trotter led Tech with 22 points.

The Tech men’s team defeated Parkside 79-55. Dawson Bilski led the Huskies with 23 points.

The Northern Michigan University women’ team defeated Purdue Northwest 57-53 Saturday. The men’s team lost 65-62 in overtime.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 7-2 at Saint Scholastica yesterday. India Charles and Kyli Dyni scored for the Lions.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated Mount Mary 65-47 Saturday evening. Katie Lundeen scored 26 for the Lions.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell 5-4 to the Marquette Mutineers Saturday night.

The Calumet Wolverines had the weekend off.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings Wings host the Boston Bruins this afternoon. Coverage begins at 12:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 95-92 to the New York Knicks Saturday night. Reggie Jackson scored 20 for Detroit, and Christian Wood snared 11 rebounds.

Pistons host the Charlotte Hornets Monday night. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
