MLB

Matt Manning struggled, as the Tigers lost 10-6 to the Rays yesterday. Tampa Bay put up five runs over the first two innings, and scored three more before Manning left in the sixth. Kerry Carpenter had three hits for Detroit, including a two-run homer.

The Tigers host the Twins tonight. Joey Wentz will pitch against Pablo López. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers managed just four hits in a 4-1 loss to the Pirates yesterday. The offensive outage spoiled a good return from the injured list by Brandon Woodruff, who gave up two runs over five innings, and struck out nine.

The Brewers entertain the Rockies tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Peter Lambert.

To make room for Woodruff, the Crew sent reliever Clayton Andrews back to Nashville.

The Reds also lost, so Milwaukee continues to lead Cincinnati by a game-and-a-half in the National League Central Division.

NFL

Former Ewen-Trout Creek and Northern Michigan University standout Jake Witt will not reach the NFL this season. Witt was selected by the Colts in the seventh round of the recent NFL draft, but suffered a hip injury in training camp. He was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Players added to that list before the final 53-man roster is announced cannot return during the regular season.

The Packers have released quarterback Danny Etling, who was on their practice squad for all of last season, and part of 2021. The move leaves Green Bay with three quarterbacks in training camp.

Great Deer Chase

The Grim family from Marquette dominated Saturday’s Great Deer Chase.

Corbin Grim took the title in the 30-mile race. Grim finished just five seconds ahead of Samuel Kilpela from Atlantic Mine. Ben Kalis of Big Rapids placed third, and claimed the single speed title. Kyla Anderson of Calumet was the fastest woman.

In the 15-mile race, Ryan Grim earned the crown, finishing 100 seconds faster than Louis Carriere, also of Marquette. Megan Broeders of Negaunee turned in the fastest women’s time.

Logan Grim won the six-mile high school/middle school race, with Leah Robinson of Ishpeming the fastest girl.

In the Mini Mize, Mark Karpinen took the title in his first triathlon ever. Lawrence Wetzel placed second, and Caleb Gregoire third. Molly Flanagan was the top women’s finisher. In the team competition, Jonah Falker, Daniel Suh and Anderson Limkemann claimed the crown.

High School

Practices begin today for high school sports across the Upper Peninsula. This fall will bring a couple of rule changes. In football, penalties by the offense that occur behind the line of scrimmage will now be walked off from the line of scrimmage. Previously, those penalties had been walked off from the spot of the infraction. In volleyball, teams will not switch sides of the court between sets, unless the officials determine that there is a significant advantage to playing on one side of the court.

The MHSAA has also confirmed that this year’s 11-player high school football championships will be played on Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, instead of the traditional Friday and Saturday. The move accommodates a college football game between Michigan State and Penn State, which will be played at Ford Field that Friday.

Guts Frisbee

The Keweenaw-based Shottle Bop guts Frisbee team continued its successful summer, with a win at the US Nationals tournament in Marquette over the weekend. Shottle Bop dispatched the Marquette-based Wolf Pack team in the finals to take its first US Nationals crown.

The Shottle Bop’s Al Nettell was named MVP of the tournament. Other members of the Shottle Bop were Will Blau, Carter Nettell, Stephen Dudenas, Derek Stone, Kyle Suvanto, Scott Brooks, and Ron Blau.

Next up on the Guts circuit is the US Guts Open in Lansing over Labor Day Weekend, with the winner getting the right to represent the United States at the 2024 World Ultimate and Guts Championships in Australia.
