Shawhan to Join Huskies’ Hockey Staff – Tuesday Sports Wrap

The Major League All-Star game will be played tonight at Minnesota. Miguel Cabrera, Max Scherzer and Ian Kinsler are on the American League roster. Victor Martinez was named to the team, and will be at the game… but will not play, because of his sore back. The Brewers will be represented by Jonathan Lucroy, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Gomez and Francisco Rodriguez.

The Tigers will return to action on Friday at home against Cleveland. The Brewers resume play Friday at Washington.

Auto Value scored 14 runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 33-14 victory over 906/Pilgrim River. Jake Loukus hit three home runs… and D.J. Coponen, Stew Krumm, Jr., Jared Loukus and Alex Loukus hit one apiece.

Canal Run Registration Still Open
Canal Run LogoRegistration remains open for Saturday’s Hancock Canal Run. The event includes a half-marathon, 10-mile and five-mile runs and walks… and a quarter-mile kids’ dash. Huskies Hire Shawhan
Former Northern Michigan University assistant hockey coach Joe Shawhan has signed on as an assistant at Michigan Tech. Shawhan spent six seasons with the Wildcats. He replaces Damon Whitten… who left to become the head coach at Lake Superior State in April. Shawhan has also worked as an assistant at Lake State… where he played his college hockey. Before that, he coached the Soo Indians for 10 seasons… and holds the record for most career wins in the North American Hockey League.

Mettlach Joins Finlandia Football Staff
Former Michigan Tech quarterback Dan Mettlach will join the coaching staff at Finlandia University. Mettlach was the 2004 GLIAC Player of the Year, as he led the Huskies to the Conference title. After obtaining his Master’s Degree at Eastern Michigan University, he served three seasons as quarterbacks coach at Northern Michigan University… served a year on the staff at Hillsdale College… and then joined the staff at Macalester College. Mettlach is a native of Gwinn. He will take over his duties as offensive coordinator at Finlandia immediately.

Granato to Join Red Wings’ Staff
Former Avalanche head coach Tony Granato will join the Detroit Red Wings as an assistant coach. Granato is currently with the Penguins. He’ll replace Bill Peters… who left Detroit to take the head coaching job at Carolina. The Wings still have another vacancy to fill… assistant Tom Renney is leaving to become head of Hockey Canada.

Young Arrested Again
Former Detroit Lions receiver Titus Young has been arrested again. Young has been charged with battery causing serious bodily injury. He’s being held in a Los Angeles jail in lieu of a 105-thousand-dollar bond. Los Angeles police have not released details about the case. Young already faces 11 charges… including felony assault and burglary… following an arrest in May of 2013. Legal proceedings in that case had been delayed while Young sought medical treatment. His father has said that Young suffers from a mental illness. Young played two seasons with the Lions, but was released because of behavioral problems.
