The Detroit Tigers were off yesterday, and open a home set against the Mariners tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Felix Hernandez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit pitcher Matthew Boyd has been fined for throwing a pitch at Minnesota Twins batter Miguel Sanó Saturday. Boyd’s pitch came after Tigers’ outfielder JaCoby Jones had been hit in the face by a Minnesota pitch. Sanó was also fined and suspended for one game for punching Detroit catcher James McCann.

Thames

Eric Thames blasted two home runs, as the Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Cincinnati Reds 11-7 last night. Hernan Perez also homered for the Brewers. Matt Garza gave up four runs over four innings in his first start of the season, but was hurt by Milwaukee errors. – only one of the runs was earned.  The Brewers host the Reds again tonight. Zach Davies will start against Scott Feldman.

High School
In high school softball today, weather permitting, Calumet plays at Hancock.

In baseball, weather permitting…

– Hancock entertain the Gogebic Miners.
– Jeffers visits L’Anse.

In track, local teams will compete at the Lake Linden Early Invitational.

In golf, Calumet, Houghton, Hancock, and L’Anse will be among the teams playing at the Norway Boys Invitational.

Now that Mel Pearson has been officially introduced as the new hockey coach at the University of Michigan, the search begins for his successor. Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret told the Detroit Free Press yesterday that it’s important that the new coach understand the dynamics of working at a college with high academic standards in a small town. Among the names being kicked around in the hockey media…
– Bill Muckalt, a former MTU assistant coach who is the coach and general manager of the USHL Tri-City Storm.
– Pat Mikesch, a former MTU player and assistant coach, who is the coach and general manager of the USHL Green Bay Gamblers.
– Current Tech assistant coach Joe Shawhan.
– Lake Superior State coach Damon Whitten, who was an assistant at Tech.
– Ron Rolston, a former Tech player who briefly coached the Buffalo Sabres.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs yesterday…
– The Warriors advanced with a 128-103 victory over the Trail Blazers. Golden State swept that series 4-0.
– The Raptors defeated the Bucks 118-93. Toronto leads that series 3-2.
– The Hawks got past the Wizards 111-101. That set is tied 2-2.

Today…
– The Spurs face the Grizzlies. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Clippers take on the Jazz. Los Angeles leads that set 2-1.
