Schouweiler , Trudell Earn CopperDog Crowns – Monday Sports Wrap

The girls high school basketball tournament opens tonight…

In Division Four District 98, L’Anse plays at Chassell, and Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Baraga. Both games will begin at 7:00.

In Division Four, District 97, both of tonight’s games will be played at Bessemer. Jeffers faces Watersmeet in the first contest, and Ewen-Trout Creek takes on the host Speedgirls in the nightcap.

In Division Three, Calumet has a first round bye, and will open the tournament Wednesday at home against the winner of tonight’s game between Ironwood and Norway. Hear Wednesday’s contest on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com

In Division Two, Houghton has a first round bye, and will play at Gladstone Wednesday. Hear that game on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

GLHL

In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 7-4 on Friday. Aaron Sturos had a pair of goals. The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Papermakers 6-1 on Saturday. Logan Rastello scored twice.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 8:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ playoff push continued last evening, with a 112-107 overtime victory over the Toronto Raptors. Detroit scored the last 10 points of the game to seal the win. Blake Griffin led the team with 27. The Pistons have won nine of their last 11 games, and entertain the Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday. Pregame coverage starts at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Half of the Detroit Tigers lost 7-1 to the New York Yankees yesterday. Ronny Rodriguez homered. Daniel Norris gave up three runs before leaving in the second inning. The other half of the Tigers fell to the Baltimore Orioles 7-5. Matthew Boyd gave up a run over three innings, and Niko Goodrum hit a home run. The Tigers face the Saint Louis Cardinals this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped an 11-5 Cactus League game to the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Josh Tomlin allowed six runs over three innings. Hernán Pérez, Christian Yelich and Manny Piña homered. The Brewers have today off.

CopperDog 150

Martha Schouweiler jumped up from third place to win the CopperDog 150 yesterday. Martha’s first career win as a musher was our CopperDog 40 a few years ago. Ryan Anderson was two minutes back, with Rita Wehseler in third place. Local musher Tom Bauer placed 13th. Another local musher, Becky Bean, was unable to finish.

In the CopperDog 80, Calumet’s Jerry Trudell came in first, nearly four minutes better than Alex LaPlante. Lynne Witte was third. Colie Fleming from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech did not finish.

In Friday’s CopperDog 25, Geri Minard took first place. Susan Serafini from Hancock was the runner-up. Other local finishers in the 25 included Hannah Tiura in ninth place, and Kady Gerhke and Ty Longstreet from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech in 10th and 11th.
