Max Scherzer struck out 14 Tigers, as the Washington Nationals edged Detroit 2-1 yesterday. The former Tiger gave up four hits over eight innings. One was a home run by Brandon Dixon in the seventh inning. Jordan Zimmermann pitched well for Detroit, allowing a run on four hits over six frames. Joe Jiménez gave up a home run to Anthony Rendon in the eighth inning, and took the loss.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a series in Chicago against the White Sox tomorrow night. Matthew Boyd will start against Reynaldo López. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit shortstop Jordy Mercer will rejoin the team for Tuesday’s game, after spending nearly two months on the injured list with a quad strain. Ronny Rodriguez has been sent to Toledo to make room.

Closer Shane Greene will represent the Tigers at next week’s All-Star Game.

Eric Thames’ home run in the eighth inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Zach Davies gave up a run in the first inning, then pitched into the sixth. Jeremy Jeffress got the win in relief. The victory moved Milwaukee back into a first-place tie with the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.

The Brewers will visit the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Adrian Houser will pitch against Tyler Mahle.

Milwaukee will have four players at the All-Star Game next week. Christian Yelich was voted a starter. He’ll be joined by Mike Moustakas, Yasmani Grandal, and Josh Hader. Yelich will also take part in the Home Run Derby.
