Anibal Sanchez struggled again yesterday afternoon, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5. Sanchez gave up six runs – three unearned – on eight hits over six innings. The big blows were home runs by Odubel Herrera and Peter Bourjos. Sanchez did not win a game in May, and his ERA has ballooned to 6.04. Cameron Maybin had two hits and scored twice for Detroit.
After winning seven of nine games on their home stand, the Tigers take today off, and begin a series at Oakland tomorrow night. Michael Fulmer will start against Sean Manaea. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Tigers played without manager Brad Ausmus yesterday. He’s taking some family leave, following the death of his mother. Ausmus was already scheduled to miss tomorrow night’s game so he could attend his daughter’s high school graduation. He’s expected to rejoin the club on Saturday.
Shane Greene threw 61 pitches for the Toledo Mud Hens in his second rehab start yesterday. He struck out seven over 3-1/3rd scoreless innings, and reported no problems with the blister that sidelined him a month ago.
The Milwaukee Brewers pulled out a 3-2, 13-inning victory over the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Jonathan Villar singled home Aaron Smith with the winning run in the top of the 13th. Carlos Torres retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the 13th to get the save. He was the seventh pitcher Milwaukee used in the game. The Braves used nine pitchers.
The Brewers wrap up that set at Atlanta tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Matt Wisler.

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play tonight…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm faces Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn at the Hancock Driving Park.
– Wolverine-Orbit meets Stanton-Superior National Bank at the Stanton field.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Sharks advanced to the Stanley Cup final by defeating the Blues 5-2 last night. San Jose wins the Western Conference title four games to two. The Eastern Conference title will be decided tonight – the Penguins and Lightning are tied at three wins per team.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers defeated the Raptors 116-78 last night. Cleveland leads the Eastern Conference final three games to two. The Thunder could wrap up the Western Conference title tonight with a victory over the Warriors. Oklahoma City leads that series three games to one.
Stanton 5-Mile Run
The Stanton 5-Mile Run will be held Saturday morning on a course from the Houghton Breakers to the Kenner Dome. The walk steps off at 8:30, and the run begins at 9:00. Shuttle service from the Dome to the Breakers will begin at 8:00. A fun run for kids will begin at 10:15 at the Kenner Dome. Online registration continues until midnight tonight here. On-site registration will begin at the Kenner Dome Saturday morning at 7:00. You can download a registration form, and get the latest details here. There will be a pre-race spaghetti dinner that is open to the community tomorrow night from 4:00 until 7:00 at the E.B. Holman Elementary School. Money raised from the dinner and the race supports activities at the school.
