MLB: Tigers Edge Royals
The Tigers won their fourth in a row last night… slipping past the Royals 2-1. Anibal Sanchez earned the win… giving up eight hits over seven innings, but allowing just a single run in the first. Both Jaba Chamberlain and Joe Nathan faces scoring threats in the eighth and ninth… but worked out of them to preserve the victory. Detroit scored in the first on a single by Ian Kinsler… and in the third on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Cabrera.
The Tigers continue that set at Kansas City tonight. Rick Porcello will start against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Detroit’s lead in the American League Central now stands at six-and-a-half games over the Royals.
Tigers’ manager Brad Ausmus left last night’s game in the second inning because he was ill. Gene Lamont filled in.
Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler has been named to the American League All Star Team. Kinsler will take the place of Victor Martinez… who will miss the contest to rest his sore back.
Brewers Drop Sixth Straight
The Brewers lost their sixth straight game last night… falling to the Cardinal 7-6. Milwaukee scored all of its runs in the first two innings… but the Cardinals came back… tying the game with four in the sixth… and winning it when Matt Holliday homered in the top of the ninth.
The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson has been called up from Triple-A to make the start for Milwaukee. Adam Wainwright will counter for Saint Louis.
With the loss, Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central shrinks to just one game over the Cardinals.
The Milwaukee loss was overshadowed by a private team meeting 20 minutes after the game. Manager Ron Roenike shared that there had been a death in the family of one of the players. Specifics were not released, because all family members had not yet been notified.
Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy has been named the starter for the National League All Star Game. Lucroy will fill in for the injured Yadier Molina.
